Last night we talked about how woefully unprepared Wolf Blitzer was to counter Hugh Hewitt’s contention that the lefty blogosphere is a "fever swamp." As Atrios noted, in these situations nobody ever brings up the fact that right wing blogs are a "racist freak show." Obviously Wolf needs educating.
The narratives that take hold in the right-wing blogosphere are traveling into totally inappropriate places like The Washington Post (who also thought it was okay to hire Red State Racist and serial plagiarist BEN DOMENECH). After the "Jill Carroll as traitor" meme passed around the bigotsphere like a social disease, Howard Kurtz took care to repeat it in his column:
I must say, though, that I found her first interview yesterday rather odd. Carroll seemed bent on giving her captors a positive review, going on about how well they treated her, how they gave her food and let her go to the bathroom. And they never threatened to hit her. Of course, as we all saw in those chilling videos, they did threaten to kill her. And they shot her Iraqi translator to death.
Why make a terrorist group who put her family and friends through a terrible three-month ordeal sound like they were running a low-budget motel chain?
Where did Howie get this shit? Where did this crap begin? Well as Crooks & Liars notes, these are some of the comments that met the approval of Charles Johnson at Little Green Footballs, flagship site of Pajamas Media and the third biggest conservative site in the blogosphere (according to TLB standings):
"I’ve been watching this traitor bitch fawn all over her captors this morning. "Nice furniture, safe, nice clothes, they NEVER threatened me". I’m very glad you were so comforatble while working to undermine our efforts in Iraq. Now, wipe that muslim DNA from your face and confess to pre-planning this?"
"She’s probably coming home with a suitcase full of cash (her kickback) and a dose of the clap."
It’s inappropriate for these narratives to be making their way into mainstream media. I’m going to do Kurtz (and Blitzer) the favor of assuming they just don’t know any better. They need some help.
So this week we’re going to be traveling into top right-wing sites: Little Green Footballs, Malkin, The Corner, Red State, Free Republic, Instahack, the Power Tools, Hewitt and anyone other conservative sites in TLB’s top 100 ecotraffic blogs and looking for representative bigot quotes for the education of Wolf (Digby keeps a file of every stupid thing Rush says, which in addition to being rather large also comes in extremely handy).
Speaking of Digby:
I don’t know if it’s that [Wolf] doesn’t know, doesn’t care or is afraid of that he-man Hugh Hewitt, but I think it’s important that he at least be armed with a rebuttal. If he allows these charges to go unchallenged after that, then there will have to be some action taken. This has gone on long enough.
The mainstream media is so entrenched in the Republican establishment that they have actually come to believe that Rush Limbaugh saying frequently that Democrats have no souls and should be deported is reasonable discourse. It’s long past time that we set the record straight. Apparently these beltway bubble boys and girls are going to have to be schooled that the right is not engaging in "reasonable discourse" when they accuse journalists of being cowards and terrorist sympathizers and being "the kind of woman who would wear one of those suicide vests." I know that’s hard to believe, but apparently that’s what we have to do.
It’s going to be a good week here on Late Nite FDL. We have some fabulous guests who have been writing about right wing blog bigots for year who will be joining us, we have wonderful prizes for the people who find the best Wolf Edification Quotes, and we promise to have fun (and clean towels) for everyone who participates.
