How Would A Patriot Act?…

Great news via firedoglake…Glenn Greenwald has finished a book due to be published in May! For those of you who aren’t familiar with Glenn’s writing, he’s been one of the most consistently articulate and excellent critics of the excesses…

I don’t know if anyone will see this on this thread at this late hour, but here goes…

I have been unable to log onto the site all day (get Page Cannot Be Displayed–Is Currently Unavailable…). Tonight, I am finally here–hallelujah!!!
I was beginning to go into withdrawal.

It it 2:40am Central Time where I am (MO) and the most recent post is “And The Good News Is…” It says there are no comments (which I find, quite frankly, unbelievable. I clicked anyway, and guess what–no comments were displayed. Also, there are no longer e-mail capabilities available to Jane or Redd/Christy.

Thanks, Jane and Redd/Christy for the wonderful site and your obviously frustating diligence and perserverence to excellence and getting things correct–in the posts and at the new site. And I appreciate and learn so much from you and the commentors. Thank you.

I will always hang in there… Can’t get enough.

Love you all,
Love fdl

A few post-speech Q&A session Bushism gems from Bush in Cleveland today:

- “History has proven that democracies can change societies. The classic case I like to cite is Japan. Prime Minister Koizumi is one of my best buddies in the international arena. And when we sit down, we talk the peace.â€

- “I knew we were at war. I knew that the enemy obviously had to be sophisticated and lethal to fly hijacked airplanes into facilities that would be killing thousands of people, innocent people, doing nothing, just sitting there, going to work.â€

- “Foreign policy used to be dictated by the fact we had two oceans protecting us. If we saw a threat, we could deal with it if you needed to you think, or not, but we’d be safe.â€

- “9/11 affected the way I think. I know these are like totalitarian fascists. They have an ideology. They have a desire to spread that ideology. And they’re willing to use tactics to achieve their strategy.â€

- “I, obviously, had a trip recently to India and Pakistan and Afghanistan and was able to see in India and in Pakistan both — it is a positive development to be a friend of Pakistan. It’s a positive development for India for America to be a friend of Pakistan. And it’s a positive development for Pakistan for America to be a friend of India.â€

- “The problem is our employers don’t know whether they’re hiring people, because there’s a whole forgery industry around people being smuggled into the United States. There’s a smuggling industry and a forgery industry. And it’s hard to ask our employers, the onion guy out there, whether or not the documents he’s being shown which look real are real.â€

The problem for me with Gore is that he’s just too damned straight. I mean, I like the man; he’s smart, decent and appears to be concerned about the right things. I also believe that he’s a genuine democrat (small d) despite his upper-class origins.

Having said that, though, I just can’t believe his Rebecca of Sunnybrook farm approach when it comes to saving whales and children. He seems to lack any sophistication at all about the darker parts of the human psyche. And then, there’s Tipper — gawd! How’d you like to be *her* teenage son or daughter.

Okay, Jimmy Carter was something of a prude too — concerned about lusting in his heart, etc., — and I admit that he didn’t make such a bad President. So maybe this isn’t a deal breaker, especially considering the alternatives, but I’d feel a lot happier with him if he’d at least to appear to have an Id once in a while. More to the point, I’d feel a lot safer if he’d acknowledge that the rest of us have one, and that we don’t want to give it up so that his kiddies won’t ever see anything bad.

“I like that. Reproductive freedom versus forced birth.”

Redd–I like “government-forced birth” even better–it reminds people who is to blame, and ought to force true conservatives to look at the issue differenty. If the government can force you to give birth, what can’t it force you to do?

Ewwwwwwww. They just showed a clip of the Rodeo Clown. And now they are going to have their daily discussion of What if Superman was a Nazi’s effect on the markets. They have Nader, Gary Hart, Pat Buchanan and some other guy. Fortunately, I have the volume low enough that I can’t really hear it. But the crawl is “The Price of Freedom.”

Even CNBC may no longer be safe.

I know I’m late to the party, but . . .

I like “Constitution Patriot.” For me, that get to the very core of what’s at stake here, and where our allegiance is. The Constitution is the ground of what defines America. Not the current regime in power, not the talking points du jour, not party platforms.

I’m sorry, but “Accountablity Patriots” sounds like we’re running around in green eyeshades, calculating costs vs. benefits or some such. Come to think of it, that’s the disease that’s got ahold of the DLC and Democratic so-called leadership in Congress . . .
