The bad news is we're having to change servers, BlueHost just can't handle our traffic. The good news is that Jamie intoxination is a full-on rock star when it comes to this stuff and he's going to be working on the transition to the new server so if things are a bit funky for a while it'll all be worked out soon. Thanks for your patience. This is what's known as a "quality problem."

I fear change.
Good Luck though.
Feingold(D-USA)!
Ok, solved the text size but not the happy face. Somehow, I don’t think my problems even hold a candle to what you are going through Jane!
Jane,
As I said to Christy:
“A dedicated commercial web server with 1000GB of monthly download and 100 Mbit bandwidth is only $100 per month (at most), and multiple servers can be automatically load-shared. Sometimes you just have to pay to get what you need. I’m sure you can get donations to cover server costs (I know I would help).”
The above price is from the hosting service that I use (aplus.net) and they are not the cheapest but they have great service.
Btw, you rock too! I will bear your child as well, if you want! Being a guy I would have to outsource the job to some extent, but will do my part to improve the gene-pool :-)
But, this is good news!!! Right? “Can’t handle our traffic”???? Duh. It’s a quantity problem!!! If you see what I mean. And thanks, Jamie. I checked out your blog and especially liked the one about the new memos.

March 14, 2006 — Robert G. Webster is one of the few bird flu experts confident enough to answer the key question: Will the avian flu switch from posing a terrible hazard to birds to becoming a real threat to humans?
There are “about even odds at this time for the virus to learn how to transmit human to human,” he told ABC’s “World News Tonight.” Webster, the Rosemary Thomas Chair at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., is credited with being the first scientist to find the link between human flu and bird flu.
Webster and his team of scientists are working to find a way to beat the virus if it morphs. He has even been dubbed the Flu Hunter.
Right now, H5N1, a type of avian influenza virus, has confined itself to birds. It can be transmitted from bird to human but only by direct contact with the droppings and excretions of infected birds.
But viruses mutate, and the big fear among the world’s scientists is that the bird flu virus will join the human flu virus, change its genetic code and emerge as a new and deadly flu that can spread through the air from human to human.
If the virus does mutate, it does not necessarily mean it will be as deadly to people as it is to birds. But experts such as Webster say they must prepare for the worst.
“I personally believe it will happen and make personal preparations,” said Webster, who has stored a three-month supply of food and water at his home in case of an outbreak. “
Whata ya’ll think of a guy who stores a three month supply of food and water in his house?

Would it be possible to set some command so that when one accesses the Comments, the page is reset to begin reading the comments (so you don’t have to scan down the article again)?
Would it be possible to put the names, date and time at the bottom of comment like Haloscan did? This might be nice for those of us who monitor the comments pretty closely — because we probably drop down to the bottom or last comment and work up to where we left off in a prior reading/review session?
And, the heading at the top — for new or recent postings — will you pick one? Is it a new or upcoming link or an old one?
Thanks a million. Great site and great work. Love your readers. Love your writing and analyses.
NOt a bad article overall, but it has maddening truth: the squeemishness of the establishment dems. Profiles in Courage. Not.
But there is this little bit of framing halfway through which is good:
Feingold’s censure motion specifically addresses the issue of illegal wiretaps.
And there are super quotes from Feingold himself, like:
Feingold said he is “extremely pleased with the way this is going.” He said he is particularly buoyed the barrage of criticism from Republicans. “If such a crazy idea has such limited appeal, why do they have the attack dogs calling all over the country about this?” Feingold asked. “It touches a nerve.”
. . . . .
“We have a great case that they have done a poor job of fighting the war against terrorism,” Feingold said of the Republicans in an interview yesterday. “We need a different strategy, one that shows we stand for something.”
. . . . .
Other sections of note:
Feingold, 53, says he is convinced that Bush broke the law in ordering National Security Agency wiretaps of overseas telephone calls and e-mails of U.S. citizens that involved people suspected of terrorist activities without first obtaining special court approval, and that his party must take a firm stand in protest. Unless Democrats make the case that they are more trustworthy than Republicans on national security issues, Feingold argues, the party cannot win control of the White House or Congress.
. . . .
While other Democrats speak more colorfully, or show up more often on television, Feingold has carved a niche as one of the least-predictable senators. As he contemplates a presidential bid, Feingold is emerging as an anti-establishment maverick, a blend of Howard Dean, John McCain and the late Wisconsin progressive senator William Proxmire.
. . . . .
The left wing of the party has greeted Feingold’s censure call ecstatically. He was the front-runner in a Jan. 31 survey of 2008 presidential candidates by the liberal blog Daily Kos. Feingold garnered 30 percent support among the more than 11,000 respondents, eclipsing retired Gen. Wesley K. Clark, who dropped to second place after leading in the previous five bimonthly polls.
I take some exception to the “left wing” characterization because the consensus views of the kos audience are right in the mainstream of majority public opinion on most issues.
We’re more about fighting for those issues than any “liberal extremism.”
It’s our aggression, and not our ideology, that stands out.
We saw the opening of the Clinton campaign at the King funeral- Bill and Hill- side by side- best get used to it- yer gonna see a LOT more of it.
Cheney is showing the way for The Big Dog. As President, the Dogette could hire her husband as a WH counselor and then delegate, delegate, delegate!

Feingold’s quote that the wiretapping case is “right in the strike zone of the concept of high crimes and misdemeanors” is one hell of an understatement. It’s more like a flat fastball right down the middle that’s five miles per hour slower than usual.

There’s nothing wrong with a little harmless nonsense once in a while. Trouble is, that’s all this is. Steel deforms well before it melts. If you don’t believe me, look up the word “forge” in an encyclopedia. The physics work just fine. You just need to understand what physics apply.
I’ll bet half the people in New York think there’s a Bermude Triangle, and that they’ve been abducted by aliens. Might even be the same 50% in both cases. When you get right down to it, 50% of the population is pretty damn stupid.

I’m betting it will. The problem appears to be that the box is a set size, and they define the type to appear in certain places. The ads look fine on a 1024×768 screen, but they look all scrunched up (to use the technical term) at 1600×1200. If you use a larger type at a lower screen resolution, you’ll see the same thing.
Long and short of this is that they need to redesign the ad to work at different screen resolutions and font sizes. That’s a tough thing to do without the ad looking “geeky”.
I hope this doesn’t work

fwiw: i tried in my above comment to use the ‘blink’ tag … thank goodness it did not work !
I’ll take that Washington Post piece…
Boy, has Feingold figured out the tactics of opposition, and how to call the Republican bluff. I’ll say it’s “touched a nerve.” The quote from Harry Reid works to connect Feingold with principle, and since practically everyone else quoted is noted as a ‘possible 2008′ presidential candidate, they pretty much serve to cancel each other out. [Especially Frist - that worked like a charm…]
Biden’s quote was actually quite good. Dodd’s is pathetic.
Shailagh Murray tries to smear and denigrate Feingold’s ‘collegial spirit’ in the Senate, and then makes a couple of very disingenuous and misleading statements that diminish the credibility of her information [ignoring the other Senators who filibustered the Patriot Act reauthorization with Feingold this time, and pretending no other Democrats voted for Judge Roberts]. And that’s the worst of it, in my opinion.
In exchange for being a WPost Page A1 “maverick,” I’ll take it. Want to share the “spotlight” Democrats? You know what to do…
Hang tough, Russ.
P.S. I adore the speed with which this website now loads (on dial-up). I even get to see the photos without waiting forever. A wonderful functional upgrade as well as very attractive and easy to use. This is American innovation and know-how at work.

Kerry seeks to block Bush’s highways nominee
WASHINGTON (AP) — Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry said Tuesday he will prevent the former head of Boston’s $14.6 billion “Big Dig,” Richard Capka, from becoming head of the Federal Highway Administration.
“I’m afraid Richard Capka could be the Brownie of highways,” Kerry said, referring to former Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Michael Brown, who became the scapegoat for the inept federal response to Hurricane Katrina.

CPUed from the last thread was how my brilliant (trust me!) plan to do an FDL send-up has run into a serious issue. My parody blog - Dire Frog Lake - was to have been hosted by Ledd Sledd and Jayne Hamster, but “Chris” has thrown a spanner into the works. :-)
I guess I’ll just have to settle for the great content and the incisive comments and leave the snarking to the talented. So little space for us amateurs…

Bias Alert: Note that “the left wing” …”survey” the WaPoo refers to was taken on 1/31, before Russ’ censure idea had surfaced. And, why is the fact that he is the front-runner of a completely unscientific poll — or that he may run for President in 2008 — even relevant to his censure motion?
Why not simply say — as the WaPoo did about Cat-Killer — that Russ “also has presidential ambitions”?
Ya think?
Is that what it means when you invite Tweety to broadcast from the lobby of the Peabody Hotel and rent rooms for a bunch of Tennesseans in order to stack the deck for a stupid straw poll? A stupid straw poll that no one wants to tell the truth about: Frist got 37% whereas 40% of the delegates were from Tennessee.
So, WaPoo, don’t think Russ is doing it to be such a “maverick.”
He’s our leader, not a maverick.

Sorry. Couldn’t resist.
Thanks for the link to the Feingold article. Did you notice how uneven the tone of the article is?
The early portion uses dismissive language like “GOP leaders…sensed that Feingold overplayed his hand and denounced the censure resolution as a political stunt by an ambitious lawmaker positioning himself to run for president in 2008.”
And “Republicans seized on Feingold’s presidential ambitions as the motivation behind his bid.”
But towards the end, even though it mentions how thrilled the wacko blogging lefties (my translation) are with his censure call, it also shows he’s serious, dedicated and principled.
Any thoughts? Only one person was credited with writing it otherwise I would have said it was a poorly blended joint effort.
