Having spent some time this morning reading through the corporate media coverage of the Feingold Censure Resolution, a couple of points jumped out at me. First, the conversation regarding President Bush’s actions on illegal domestic spying without a warrant has switched from "national security matter" to "the President broke the law — so how best do we hold him accountable."
That is an enormous change in terms of discussion, and one that will only continue as the Senate Judiciary Committee must now take up the Censure resolution — since Bill Frist’s over-played hand yesterday in his ploy to quash all dissent in the Senate got shot down…twice…by the Democratic leadership.
The second thing that I noticed was that the groundswell of grassroots support got a mention in a number of ways, including in this NYTimes article:
Mr. Feingold said he viewed his censure resolution as a reasonable way to hold the president accountable. He said it fell short of the push for impeachment that some critics contend is warranted by Mr. Bush’s approval of the surveillance program and his strong defense of it."This is certainly more serious than anything President Clinton was accused of doing," said Mr. Feingold, who added that the grass-roots response to his proposal was strong after he announced his intention on Sunday. "It is reminiscent of what President Nixon was not only accused of doing, but was basically removed from office for doing."
Or this article from Donna Brazile in today’s Roll Call (Subscription required to see the whole thing, so I’m going to pull a short excerpt here, but it is worth a read.):
The progressive blogosphere is on fire right now. Web loggers are pumped up about the effort by Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) to censure President Bush for breaking the law on domestic surveillance and taking matters into his own hands….The message from the left-leaning blogosphere is clear: Democrats should understand the real issue. The point is not censure or impeachment; it is Congress’ lack of oversight and its failure to hold anyone accountable for major mistakes or missteps. And especially, it’s about clearly misleading the American public.
From faulty pre-war intelligence to the negligent response to Hurricane Katrina and the unjustified cost for Medicare prescription drug benefits, there has been no meaningful oversight by the GOP-controlled Congress. It is doubtful whether they would be willing to hear evidence against the president.
While the Feingold resolution is not going anywhere given the full Republican control of Washington, D.C., a change in leadership in the fall would make this a ripe item for conversation and action in 2007 and beyond….
Oversight is a fundamental responsibility of Congress, which until the Republicans took over was a coequal branch of government. It’s long past time for the Republican Congress — and in particular the House and Senate Intelligence committees — to stop protecting the administration and start doing more to protect the American people.
The 2006 political campaign season, which is under way across America, will truly come down to a test of wills. If my party’s leaders, whom I admire and respect, cannot figure out three things this electoral season that the GOP will use as wedge issues to distract and divide — Iraq, the war on terror and national security, and cultural issues like abortion and same-sex marriage — then my party finally will have earned its minority status.
It’s about damn time a member of the party establishment stood up and said what we’ve been saying all along. Sounds to me like Donna Brazile picked up a copy of Crashing the Gate (which is fantastic, btw) and realized she’d better get on board or risk losing her consulting gigs when the progressive wave crashes down. Or perhaps its just that she thinks this is the right thing to do, given the President admitted publicly to breaking the law and it is the job of Congress to provide oversight and censure and all. Good on her — change is tough, but the Democratic establishment needs to fully understand that change is coming, whether they like it or not, because all of us in the progressive roots refuse to go back to the status quo, which really isn’t working for anyone anyway.
This is not a one-day battle. It is a series of skirmishes we are going to be waging for quite a while…and that we will keep on waging.
The grassroots are not going away — Russ Feingold understands and appreciates that fact, and is willing to work with us to harness our energy and drive in a synergistic fashion, and the rest of the Democratic establishment is beginning to wake up to it as well, if only because we’ve needled them enough that they know we aren’t going to be silenced.
It is because so many of you put in the work yesterday, making phone calls, sending faxes, and making your voice heard in the halls of the Senate that this Censure Resolution is now moving to the Judiciary Committee for further consideration. Thank you so much for this — you’ve helped to make a difference. Truly, we can’t know which phone call may have helped to stiffen Paul Sarbanes’ spine or Harry Reid’s, but Frist’s overplayed hand and arrogant tone certainly didn’t help matters — and knowing that all of us were in their corner had to help stiffen that resolve. So great work everyone.
But there is more work to be done. I’ll be outlining more action steps shortly — and I look forward to your input on how to continue to advance the ball on censure — and on framing this discussion writ large in terms of the corruption, the incompetence, the outright lying, the abysmal failure that is this Republican Congress and their cowardly rubber stamp actions on behalf of the Bush Administration.
Nothing like a conversation on how the President broke the law, how he isn’t above the law, and how we can best hold him accountable as a starting point, is there?
THIS is the genie that Frist was trying to shove back in the bottle yesterday…because this is just the conversation that the Republican leadership and Rove and all of their power-crazy cronies don’t want citizens in this nation to have. Once you start thinking about that single instance of law-breaking, you inevitably begin to question so many other aspects of the Bush presidency — the lies about Iraq, our failure to capture Osama, Katrina, the budget deficit and the profligate spending habits of Republicans in power, what all of this means for our children’s future, the failure of Medicare reform…it’s endless — and then the house of cards begins to tumble in around them.
Digby had a fantastic article about the long fight yesterday, that I would love everyone to read and think about — we have to commit to this for the long haul. It’s time we took our nation and our party back. The longest journey starts with a single step. Don’t know about you guys, but I just started my training for a marathon.
Let’s keep moving the ball forward…together.

Fitz, Feingold and Murtha, Oh My!
Beautiful site Jane and Redd!
woo hoo – fitz of fitz?
or not
Am I first, I mean fitz????
Can’t believe it. I got here on a hunch. The link on the old site takes you to the main wordpress site…not here.
And HUGE congrats!!! Really feels spacious here.
Fitz!
I’ve been on an emotional roller-coaster over the last 24 hours over this censure issue — it seemed like it could either be fantastic or terrible every few minutes.
Now things seem to be settling down and it all looks very good. I think Feingold really had thought it through, and had it play out just the way that he wanted it. This political savvy together with his intrepid attitude is extremely encouraging.
I hope sending it to committee isn’t GOoP for ‘kill it before it spreads’!
Lovely site!
Redd – Will the posts from the other page be transferred to this page?
I agree with B. Muse; this is a beautiful site!
Goodgreat looking site. (But no comment preview?) OTOH, if even Donna Brazile gets it, what’s wrong with the rest of the Democratic party?Nice new site. And excellent that the MSM is noticing the netroots support for Feingold’s motion.
New site looks good.
Sarbanes is my Senator and he needs no comments from anyone on his “spine.”
lovely new digs – congratulations!
so we’re on East Coast time now? there goes the neighborhood…..
I like the new site. For one thing, it works. It also appears to support different text sizes, at least in the center area where all the real content is. That’s very important.
Sorry to see that the Democrats caved yet again. Sorry, but not very surprised. Donna Brazile is wrong – they’ve already earned their place as the minority party and are rapidly working toward non-party status.
Fantastic! to the new site. I was out and about all day yesterday but plan on acting today.
Another good thing about this site is that it doesn’t require Javascript.
Nice new digs. So, is it twue? Did the pwesident bweak the law?
I’d be interested in people’s take on Feingold leaving after introducing the censure resolution. I thought it was perfect, and made Specter look like a petulant loser. “why won’t anyone debate me?” Waaaah.
I am, however, glad that Durbin was around to field a few questions, and Sarbanes (?) to kill Frist’s little punk play. I may have missed discussion on this with the site transition, but I was interested in your thoughts!
hey everyone ! this is a test of the emergency comment braodcast system
btw, says 13 comments, but my screen shows 7 ?
They might want to look at allocating a little more bandwidth to this site. I’m about 1-for-5 in getting it to load.
Redd–this is a great piece. I read Digby and loved his piece on the long fight too. But my stomach hurts b/c these Democratic senators are so cowardly. John Warner’s staffer hung up on my 70 year old mother who has lived in Virginia for 36 years. I am very tempted to call and complain.
Murray and Cantwell in WA still not committed. C’mon, senators, pull it together! I said “we need to be united on this, and hang the GOP votes against censure around their necks like an albatross”.
Whassup with the CPU quota error? Can you get them to waive that while you transition over? Not exactly treating the new customers well, are we, Bluehost?
Lovely new site. Had trouble loading – said CPU quota overloaded. What’s with the comments? So few and the time stamp seems off.
I truly think the progressive bloggers have made an impact. Beautiful site. Keep up the fight.
gorgeous new site… just wanted to report that on my local (SF Bay Area) NPR talk show this am, which was about Bush and the GOP (with only GOP guests, unlike the show that was done on the Dems, with both Dem and GOP guests, but that’s another rant…) anyway, each of the GOP guests’ idiotic statements were challenged by strong progressive, dem callers, even from as far away as Michigan. Not a single, stupid talking point, or unchallenged stupid assumption or label went unchallenged. YAY for these blogs for helping us find our voice!
Thanks!
love the new site…spacious and gracious
r meme/wh crafted talking pt: “making the president the enemy”
evidence:
1. vp cheney: “Some Democrats in Congress have decided the president is the enemy.” (depere, wi appearance)
2. speaker hastert: “It is our hope that the 66 Democrats who voted with us on the PATRIOT Act would not support the House Democratic Leadership or the extreme viewpoints of their colleagues that the enemy is the President of the United States.” (release)
3. what i understand is a popular far-right blog called “captain’s quarters”: “Only an idiot would attempt to make a president the enemy during wartime” (Blogometer)
1-2-3 strikes = wh crafted talking pt
(ot) suggestion: a “preview” button for comments
One way to get the attention of the timid Dems is to give Feingold support in a way they all understand. An organized effort to give money to Feingold’s Progressive Patriots Fund could do that. The goal would be to donate money to the fund to support Dems who are willing to hold the President accountable for law breaking.

Lovely new site. Had trouble loading – said CPU quota overloaded. What’s with the comments? So few and the time stamp seems off.
I had the same message – thought I’d broken the place without even trying.
loved the digby piece redd. quite a bumpy ride through the internet to get here today! kinda like white water rafting.
Thanks ReddHedd. I and some others had some trouble accessing, this is pretty normal and to be expected in any cutover.
Really appreciated your point about how the framing of this in the corporate media had changed, it’s no longer a “national security matter, the President broke the law.”
I saw an article last night in the WaPo or NYT’s from Bush that sounded like a “pull-out” from Iraq, right after midterms. It’s typical of Rove’s power of obfuscation and is guaranteed to undercut all anti-Iraq-war candidates. It confirms how critical a vote on censure is. If Feingold doesn’t “draw a line in the sand, Rove will just obfuscate it.
Any site with you and Jane on it is a really cool site.
OT, is there any way to “preview” a comment?
we should have a little service and say goodbye to haloscan. maybe burn some sage and pen some halohaiku.
Oh Goodie. Comments finally are working. From a comment I left late last night at Kos when I should have been sleeping…
—
Marketing 101: Get your message out early, make it simple, make it believable, and repeat it constantly.
Feingold has laid the truth out for all to see: the king is a liar; we need to call him on his shit.
It’s OK if the move doesn’t win…this time…the message is out there. Seeds of doubt and all that.
I don’t think Russ is pimping for president yet, I think he’s firing the first round of the midterm electioneering: Dems will run against Bush, his administration, and his record: The Message. We need this.
—
Alvord: I like the idea of tangible support to Feingold. Email and phone calls talk; money shouts.

The time displayed above the titles of Redd’s and Jane’s posts is still Pacific Standard Time. Greenwich Mean Time appears in the comments we’re posting.
is everybody else getting a delay in seeing comments posted? “your comment is awaiting moderation”
Joshua Marshall did an excellent job keeping a tally of where individual lawmakers stood on Social Security “reform” back during the President’s “Bamboozlepalooza” tour.
I’ve just done a small part to try to help out with a similar venture.
I have created a blog called Censure President Bush. I will try to update the site daily with a running update on how Senators are responding to phone calls from constitutents.
If you call your Senators, please stop by and leave a quick comment with their statement to you.
super double-secret East Coast time
Bad link above… the site is Censure President Bush.
OfT: LATimes is reporting that GOP is urging Katherine Harris to pull out of her Florida Senate race. http://www.latimes.com/news/na…..s-national
Greenwich Mean Time appears in the comments we’re posting.
aaaah. i’m still figuring out how many pints in a quart, and really screwing up cc’s and ml’s for the cat’s daily medication. forget the metric system and dollars vs euro’s. now it’s greenwich mean time!
AP in the Forbes link is reporting Frist sent Feingold’s Censure resolution to the Judiciary.
“I look forward to a full hearing, debate and vote in committee on this important matter,” Feingold, D-Wis., said in a statement. “If the committee fails to consider the resolution expeditiously, I will ask that there be a vote in the full Senate.”
http://www.forbes.com/business…..91995.html
Feingold is a leader, not a maverick. We have to keep making that correction.
Cujo359, third parties are not the answer; third parties are not the answer; third parties are not the answer. We have to keep working with Democrats. They have the right values – they just need to know they’ll be supported.
found you all again. and before I get lost again, Yes ReddHedd and Jane, this is a beautiful site !
thanks to StacyB, egregious, and Wilson for leaving the digital crumbs on the trail for us more challenged folks to find !
Wow! I love the new site. It may take awhile getting used to the comments section, though. Each name seems so highlighted and each comment so centered that I feel I have to say something important. Uh, hi, everyone.
Whenever I hear someone say that Feingold is a maverick, I’m going to have to protest that no, Feingold is a leader.
(Cujo359, third parties are not the answer; third parties are not the answer; third parties are not the answer. We have to keep working with Democrats. They have the right values – they just need to know they’ll be supported. Cowardly, maybe. They need to be backed to have courage. And I do agree with backing individual Democratic candidates until the party comes around.)
Hello, everyone. Have I been posting on another other-world FDL site? I had problems getting in all morning, and then when I clicked on the marked site, I got to the old site. Seemed to be working and I posted there. Then emptywheel gave me a link here. Woohoo — are we all at the same party or are people still at the old site?
“Bush Sets Target for Transition in Iraq”
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..00657.html
I suspect this was a Rove-back up media plan to grab headlines when some non-Iraq bad news hit. Once Rove saw Feingold on Stephanapolus, on Sunday morning, he told Clusterbush, that he was giving this speech on Monday to take corporate media away from Russ. WAG alert.
New site is looking mighty fine. It will be great when the migration is completed.
John C., it would be great if Harris stays in the Florida race. It just adds to the overal GOP taint.
i wish someone like john murtha would back censure. you know, someone who doesn’t care about positioning for his or her future. as long as the press keeps tagging feingold as a possible contender for 08 his proposals will be suspect.
Prof:
the maps you were looking for over on the EPU site are here:
http://www.google.com/search?h…..voting+map
I’m assuming the link was lost in transition
Very nice. Congrats, etc., etc.
But one big complaint – Can you align right or justify the articles and comments.
The centering is killing me. I feel like I am being asked to read perpetual poetry.
grandmaJ, was just going back over to where you and wilson were to leave you a link for this site – glad you found us, hope you and yours are well, have been following Cody and Donald’s progress through your posts.
What was with that box upper right at ‘old’ site, showing some kind of tally on Finegold’s Resolution ? Are we missing a vote, or is it some casual tally ?
Hey can we
strikenow? How cool (assuming that the strike out actually worked above).
This is just a test to see if I can post on this beautiful new site. If so, some of the earlier problems I encountered must be fixed!
Yea!
I suspect this was a Rove-back up media plan to grab headlines ….
a rovian favorite: “look over there, not here”
Hi all — sorry for the bumpy ride today. We’re trying to do the tech transition, but we’ve hit a snag or two. We’ll try and keep everyone updated as we can — hopefully we’ll be fully done with this process in a day or two and in one place after that.
In the meantime, check blogspot first and then here. We’ll try to post updates in both places until we are settled. Thanks!
FiredogLake has become one of my favorites in about six weeks; wonderful stuff and spiffy new site. Good luck on the Koufax(es).
We have reined in our Democratic investments of time and $ from a wide circle of advocacy groups to the DNC and indiviudal candidates. My party has betrayed me so often, it sometimes hurts to pick up the phone again. But, I want to say how much our “virtual communities”, like Firedog, do to support me, my inner circle of friends and activists, and the progressive sphere here in MD. Thanks!
I’m looking at this via Netscape 7 for Windoze and the calendar is all wonky. Just thot I’d mensch.
I should add that it’s only the calendar on the home page that’s all wonky.
I said this earlier (before the site was open for comments).
But I really think we need to be repeating over and over: You impeached Bill Clinton for a consensual blow job between adults. Yet you won’t censure the President for illegally spying on American citizens?
Blow job afficianados all over the country might think twice about that.
That is to say, the wonky calendar becomes unwonky when I reload the page. I think that covers it.
Love the new site, but would prefer left justified text.
Also thanks for the post – it puts into perspective the difficulty of reframing the issue toward accountability!
I was a bit depressed that more Senate Dems didn’t immediately embrace Feingold’s resolution, but as you so eloquently set forth, eventually they will have to embrace it or they will be washed away by the rising tide!
Prof. you can find a whole mess of the maps you were looking for on the EPU site are here:
http://www.google.com/search?h…..voting+map
I’m assuming the link was lost in transition…
The two named categories go to error pages that do not forward you anywhere.
What emptywheel said.
Congrats on the new site! I need to catch up on what happened last evening as I wasn’t home and missed all the thread comments before the switch over. I’m thirsty for all info on the coverage of Feingold and the reaction to his resolution.
Happy Lunar Eclipse!
Nice new site — but EPU is right about the justify left, instead of center.
I’ve been thinking a lot about the issues of Why We Fight and What Battles Are Worth Fighting and Which Tactics Are Best — and how important it is for us to understand both the lay of the land and our strategic objectives.
But all of this is part of the long view narrative, and needs more attention than this post allows.
Congrats on the new site!!! Can we have a wide screen comments section?
There are still people on the old comments page for this posting!
Save them!
Great site!
There are people still commenting on the old site for this posting — save them!
Great new site. Now, bring on the catapults. Our fine gold hero is alone on the field.
EPU’d:
New war target: Venezuela?
Um, I don’t remember hearing that Congress declared war on Venezuela.
The newest laughable fake intel:
the same neocons that invented Iraq lies are now saying that Venezuela is selling uranium to Iran. Hence let’s blast them both into the next dimension.
What is wrong with this picture? Among other things, Iran has plenty of uranium already. If they wanted more, it wouldn’t come from Venezuela. Are the neocons in such a big hurry that they can’t even come up with respectable bogus talking points?
Is every country with oil our new enemy in the Endless War of Aggression?
And Rice says we have to approve the India nuclear deal and there isn’t a moment to spare. Why, because they have already set the date for bombing Iran? Hint, no mideast travel at the end of the month.
If you can stand it, tune into Fox News. It’s all Evil Iran all the time. Propaganda is hard work! At least we’re not paying for it. Wait….

ok – cool new look!
I left this back on HaloScan – Evan Bayh will *not* support Feingold, as of this A.M.
Please see Haloscan for appropriate Bayh-bitching….
Asshat.
I CAN’T PROPERLY READ THE ARTICLE AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE, BECAUSE THE BLOG ADS ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PAGE OVER THE TEXT RATHER THAN ON THE RIGHT OF MY SCREEN. IS ANYONE ELSE HAVING THIS PROBLEM?
I spoke with staffers at both Hawaii Senators and was insistant the Prez be held accountable for breaking the law. Akaka’s office said they were taking a poll and so far, most in favor of censoring. We’ll see at vote time!
I’m sorry, but centering the type is a mistake. It makes it difficult to read, especially in long passages. It tires the eyes. Please go back to a flush left/rag right layout. I really like this site but this is a Typography 101 blunder.
Site looks great!
I can’t wait to add Kobe in a raft in all that open water in the header.
I like the centering of the text/images better than the left justify, but that is because I’m viewing on a large resolution/screen.
Greenwhich meantime?? Oy vay.
Got lost in the “unauthorized” zone for awhile. Glad to find you again, Redd…
Like the new site.
I was at a breakfast meeting this morning with Barbara Radnofsky, the Democratic Senate challenger to Hutchison in Texas. She’s a big Feingold supporter and said she would vote for his censure resolution. (P.S.: She was also great on a lot of other issues of interst to readers of this blog, and I encourage you to check out her site: http://www.radnofsky.com )
Wow–got blocked off the old site- and then re-routed here. Nice place. Let’s see if the posting works.
How many members of Congress support Sen. Feingold’s efforts to end the NSA’s Al Qaeda/international terrorist surveillance program?
Above my comment it says:
egregious says: Your comment is awaiting moderation
errr, what does it mean?
can i fix the prev comment, make the links live?
1) Great news about the Democrats turning back Frist’s and Specter’s little games. Let’s see if the press will report on them the way they report on things GOP-friendly!
2) Left-justified beats center-justified any day.
Feingold dominated the WaPo’s online Political chat today.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..01379.html
“your comment is awaiting moderation”? What does that mean?
Woohoo! Nice redesign! Bye bye, Haloscan.
…although I’d lose the center-alignment…
Just sent a chatty little note to my uberconservative Senator (groan) Tom Coburn urging his support of the censure. I pointed out his strict constructionist view of the constitution and my belief that he meant it. He has a chance to prove it instead of just using empty rhetoric. What do you suppose my chances are of getting his support for the censure?
WASHINGTON (AFP) – Treasury Secretary John Snow urged Congress to set aside partisan bickering and raise the US national debt ceiling this week, or face a disastrous cash crunch for the federal government.
In a speech here to a conference of regional bankers, Snow said it would be inconceivable for Congress not to pass legislation on the debt limit before it heads into a recess at the end of this week.
“I am urging members of Congress in the strongest possible terms to resist coupling an increase in the debt ceiling with other issues,” Snow said.
“Rather, they should vote to raise the ceiling this week. It would be unthinkable for them not to take action,” he said, warning that the “full faith and credit” of the US government was too precious to be compromised.
Snow has issued increasingly urgent warnings to Congress that the statutory debt limit of 8.184 trillion dollars will be hit this week, and that the government will then lose its borrowing power.
Once the US government reaches the ceiling, it comes under threat of defaulting on its debts and can lose the ability to raise future credit on the capital markets.
Last week, Snow said new issues of federal debt instruments would only raise enough cash to keep government operations financed until mid-March.
But Democratic members of Congress are said to be balking at increasing the debt limit unless the administration of President George W. Bush, which has overseen a huge rise in the US budget deficit, curbs its appetite for funds.
“We have to remember that current federal borrowing needs today are simply the product of past decisions,” Snow said in his speech.
“While we always welcome a debate on budget priorities, swift action on the debt limit must still be taken this week.
“There should be no doubt over whether the government will be able to pay its bills on time, this time next week.”
Huffington
Now here’s an issue that isn’t getting much attention yet.. Great opportunity for the dems to show how they would conduct oversight if the voters give it to them..tough situation- it all needs to be taken care of this week.
The old site is now redirecting here on refresh.
I too would much prefer left-justified text (including the name of the commenter, seems to me).
And probably the comment numbers (and therefore the grey header) should shrink significantly in size (by about half)?
Pretty smooth transition, overall, though, huh?
I liked the old site better.
Meet me halfway and kill the center justification and I should be fine. It makes it hard to read the really long, good posts y’all do.
Whoa! I was captured by space aliens and dropped off here!? ; )
yes, center alignment makes baby Jesus cry. But the site redesign is the tasty goodness… (and complaining that I need to only post once every 15 seconds when I haven’t posted at all is pretty weird…)
“The message from the left-leaning blogosphere is clear: Democrats should understand the real issue. The point is not censure or impeachment; it is Congress’ lack of oversight and its failure to hold anyone accountable for major mistakes or missteps. And especially, it’s about clearly misleading the American public.”
It’s not though. It’s about drawing a line in the sand and saying brazen illegality by the executive is not OK. This is not a mistake or a misstep by the administration. It’s an attempt by the executive to remove itself from the rule of law, forever. It’s depressing that even someone who supports the censure motion can’t see that.
I’d like lend my support to the nominations for right justification and comment preview.
Especially the justification. I’m getting a headache reading centered text.
Please left-justify paragraphs, if possible.

Boy, those NSA dudes are bizy sumbiches
emptywheel: They didn’t impeach Clinton for the blowjob – they impeached him for lying about it under oath so his wife wouldn’t find out while being questioned about an unrelated matter.
As opposed to openly defying a law that is supposed to protect our rights as citizens.
That’s the contrast. Once again, of course, we’re beyond six-word territory, but maybe someone can simplify that thought without losing the meaning. If not, one can always count on people paying more attention when you say the word “blowjob”.

Hey, new digs. Very nice.
Just moved to a new office at work and it feels like a have a new job…change is good.
Nice redesign, overall. I really like the styling for blockquotes.
But please switch from centered text to left-aligned text. You are making it much harder for your visitors to read the site.
Nice site — again. I’ve been in/out of this mirror several times.
Agree on justify left, maybe even including the commenter names, if possible?
great site and i tend to agree with others on the left justify. I am sure you guys will work out all the kinks when time permits. Thank you FDL and other blog sites that have rallied support around the country.
thanks again egy!

No prob. It’s fair exchange for the many times you have made me laugh out loud. I’m a Scottish lassie, generally dour.
:)
“The centering is killing me. I feel like I am being asked to read perpetual poetry.”
Agreed. PLEASE justify left, the center-justification is very tiring to read. I don’t want to have to search for the start of a line on every line break. PLEASE change back!
Wow. Made a post on the old site, tried to make a second one, and POOF the whole thing just disappeared.
Come back 3 hours later and there’s new territory to explore.
Love the fire and the lake. Can’t find the dog.
Also, when I tried to post, I got this comment: “Sorry, you can only post a new comment once every 15 seconds. Slow down cowboy.” Huh? Didn’t post anything yet.
Oh, and Happy Birthday to me.
Ummm. I found a bug, an infinite loop it seems.
If you click on the category “firedoglake” or “pro-choice”… the site goes into a perpetual redirection loop.
Moderation? My comment went into moderation? What did I do?
Let’s get this down to a single sentence that sums it all up
The President does NOT have inherent authority to violate the US Constitution at will
I usually like Specter, but c’mon, that BS about how it’s not illegal to warrantlessly eavesdrop on purely domestic communications because Dear Leader W’s “intent” was honorable is a claim that would NEVER fly for anyone else from being held rightly accountable for their clearly illegal action
Hard to figure out how to post, and the times are all wrong on the comments, at least as I view things.
great site and i tend to agree with others on the left justify. I am sure you guys will work out all the kinks when time permits. Thank you FDL and other blog sites that have rallied support around the country.
egregious says: “There are people still commenting on the old site for this posting — save them!”
March 14th, 2006 at 7:12 pm
How are they getting to the old site?
Great new place. When’s the house warming party?
First, love the new look.
Second, I appreciate you offering up a wider look at what went down yesterday. The more it becomes a given that the Prez broke the law, the easier (hopefully) it will be to hold him accountable.
At some point, the Dem leaders have got to stand up and take a stand. A lot of us have been making phone calls, writing letters, donating money and volunteering for political campaigns. At some point, though, Congressional Dems have got to start getting their hands dirty.
Lieberman’s a good example. He talks about solving the problem rather than censuring the President.
Fine. What’s the solution? Retroactively legalize a crime? Never make a final determination as to the program’s legality? Let the White House accuse his party of coddling terrorists on the off chance that he may someday get Rummy’s job?
Great options, Joe.
I.e., does anyone else see “7:27 pm” as the time of my comment, which was just posted at 2:30 pm EST?
Very nice setup. Much easier on the eyes. Congrats!
Prof – the comment times are Zulu. It’s been brought up already.
Please scrap the center alignment. It’s impossible to read. Align to the left margin, please.
Just got a “site suspended” message. Guess there are some bugs still at work.
WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
How beautiful. Congrats Jane and ReddHedd!
As of fairly recently people tuning into the blogspot site were not automatically referred here, or got an error message. Now apparently everybody is sent here.
But some people who got on earlier in the day are still commenting on haloscan.
Feedback: left-justify please, and whatever it takes to get rid of the error messages. Maybe they don’t expect so many people to -stay- on the comments section. We’re just funny that way.

Prof, Feingold mentioned “Youngstown” in his Censure speech yesterday. Big props to you.
Beautiful site. Just lovely.
The CPU Quota error came up for me when I tried to view the comments, though, about five minutes ago (2:35 p.m. East Coast time, fwiw).
Just a quick update on Boxer and Feinstein: No statement from either as of about 1:00 p.m. EC time …
Kind regards,
Dog, etc.

New site looks great–one reccommendation: Go to a “justified left” layout of text, rather than centered.
Congress always raises the debt ceiling, so why not raise it to infinity and get it over with.
is it official? are we .com now? got redirected to the new website. love the humping mouse! does he stay?
Actually, a revised suggestion:
FULLY-justified text (left and right margins) would probably work fine as well (and then the commenter’s name could stay centered), instead of the centered text.
The Conyersblog.us has fully-justified text, and it is very easy to read, and has a very nice appearance.
P.S. On my first comment above, it took two tries to get it to post — got an error message the first time.
Cathy – might as well raise it to infinity and beyond. just wait until babyboomers start to retire next year!!!
As a Californian I have been leaning of Feinstein and Boxer to take action.
One of Feinstein’s people told me that she is going to be of the Gang of Seven reviewing the NSA activity going into the future, as if that has spit to do with whether Bush committed a crime in the past.
My fellow Californians need to keep this sillyness in mind as the call to get movement from Di.

Jane and Red:
The site really looks beautiful – with a few tweaks it’ll be just PERFECT! Agree with the hope for left-aligned text and love the comments numbering – so much easier to keep track of!
Hey All- Had a bit of trouble getting in today, but glad to see everyone is here. Especially glad to see GrandmaJ…I have thought of you often these last weeks, but haven’t been able to read everything to know if you had posted. Hope you and your are hanging in there.
Thank you, Redd and Jane, for your mountains of hard work. The site is looking great!
good luck with your new board guys
anyway, I said this on hapl scan but I’ll repeat it here
the common supporteres of this president give no weight to the term “oversight”, they think that’s some kind of liberal concept
we need to direct the conversation to the more tangilbe
something like;
congress needs to have a method to find out if the administration using the awesome power of the presidency for national security or his own financial gain
and we need to make sure the president isn’t using his power to gain information for his friends
Impressed with your new home. More impressed with your wisdom and inspiration. I am continuing to phone or fax all senators – some are second calls. I recall the 60’s, Watergate, Kent State shootings – show my age and demand respect for my view -while being polite and sweet. Ah, I use the word “reasonable” – indeed, we are reasonable with our expectations for support of Feingold’s proposal to hold Bush accountable.
Best new feature……numbered comments. Yippppeeeeee!!!
Please, please go to left-justified – I’m getting dizzy!
Thanks for the communication Jane- I will guess that your comments will never appear in a customer testimonial! Still it’s a great looking site.
First things first — the site layout is just fabulous.
Second, a message of determination: [ Click ]
Keep up the work. There are other forces working behind the scenes. They will surface.
You are not alone.
NPR morning edition did a bit on the censure motion… without ever mentioning Feingold’s reason for bringing it forward (FISA). I don’t know if the ommission was intentional, but they missed the most important point. ARGUH! The effect was “just another political ploy by defeated Dems… nothing to see here.”
http://firedoglake.com/2006/03…..ment-51657
Let’s see if we can highlight a comment to reply to.
Nope-that didn’t quite work.
cujo359, emptywheel. Why did the Republicans impeach Clinton? Because they could.
Why won’t/haven’t they impeach[ed] Bush? Because they don’t wanna.
This is not about consistency; it’s about power.
new site is very nice. may i humbly suggest to please left justify and narrow the text column a bit. following long lines on a computer monitor is hard on the eyes, not to mention centered long lines.
i’ve enjoyed the postings here for quite some time now. thanks for all the intelligent and thoughtful words and ideas …. y’all help make me feel smarter than the average bear.
kevin, i emailed boxer and feinstein this morning (as well as feingold since i grew up in wisconsin). the last time i emailed them on an issue i got a response from boxer’s office in a couple of days, and didn’t hear back from feinstein for a couple of months. i’ll be clocking them to see how quick they are to acknowledge this time.
I don’t like the “waiting for moderation” feature
I think you should allow the post and delete as neccessary
I was probably one of the last posters in the old site. (argh!)
I called Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s San Francisco office this morning to ask what her position is on the Feingold Censure Resolution. I was told she hasn’t announced a position yet. I asked when it was coming and was told that was unknown. I stated that as a constituent I certainly wanted her to support it. He took my zip code and then told me that they’ve been getting “a ton of calls” about it.
It bugs me that she doesn’t know her position until she’s seen how the wind is blowing, but at least it might mean my call mattered.
Keep the pressure on, FDLers! It may shift the tide.
p.s., I hate the centering too, but I guess that will get flushed eventually. ;-)
“We have to remember that current federal borrowing needs today are simply the product of past decisions,†Snow said in his speech.
Is that the voice of addiction or what? Not bad decisions, not irresponsible decisions, not decisions made by a Republican President and a Republican dominated Congress. Snow makes it sound like the national debt is an act of God. It just happened. I was standing on the street corner and then wham! a $8.184 trillion debt fell on me.

Welcome Home Coz, just spare us any details on the a um, probes
Happy Birthday Prof!
How do we refresh without having to scroll down from the top? Do we even need to refresh to read new comments?
Oh so right: “This is not a one-day battle” — no battle is. This is for the long haul. Firedoglake and Glenn and Digby et al did a great job mobilizing callers and letter writers yesterday — and we can do that again today and tomorrow and …
Ten calls and/or letters a day: easy with PCs and printers, speed dial, e-mail. Letters to the editor, letters to my senators, letter to my congressman (Darryl Issa, oh well).
My talking points? Dissent is not treason. Democrats are not traitors. This is not about wiretapping: “It’s the warrants, stupid.” I keep it simple, in light of my audience (senators and, well, you know). Preserve the Constitution, begin real investigations, conduct real oversight. Repeat daily.
P.S. … nice to have Haloscan gone, but the center alignment makes it very hard to read IMHO.
Testing, testing; Congratulations on your new digs; hope the suckiness is resolved soon…and Happy Birthday to Prof!
Just read this headline at Raw Story:
“Exclusive: Democratic offices slam Feingold censure move… ‘Practically handed victory to White House…’ Developing…”
Jane, We may need marching orders.
Wow, love the look. I love it all. I especially like commenter’ names posted above our comments. I like that ReddHedd has a real name. And I like the center-justify, it makes speed-reader-me slow down and consider the comment a little longer. If this was your goal, I think it’s working. Can’t wait to get home and see the site on my own computer instead of this old-timey Dell thing at my client’s office.
I agree we need to give Feingold our love, and in his business, unfortunately, love is money.
Have any other Senators supported Russ yet? Whose news cycle is this today, anyway?

Had enough?

I still have the remnant haloscan comments open, and have invited everyone over to the new house.
We don’t retain the haloscan-based comments here, to get them I am trying to google firedoglake and then go to cached. Once it worked and once it gave me week-old posts.
scarecrow; We know it’s about power (well, I do, but I suspect emptywheel does, too). Their power, to some extent, depends on continued public support. What we’re trying to do is show that this will not continue.
Besides, if you’re going to assert that it’s about power, you have to explain why it’s clearly not about principle.
Left justify is great
Talked with staffer in Senator Feinstein’s office this morning. She said they have been getting lots of phone calls on the censure issue. Senator Boxer’s number was busy.
Left justification and no “waiting for moderation”. Perfection at last!
OK, now for

It also appears that once a comment makes it through “moderation”, the whole thread gets renumbered…

wow . . .
Hey, nice place ya got here. I’ll just set up my little chair over here in the corner.
I gotta say, I’m relieved that it’s a censure and not impeachment. Based on the way things have been going the last few years, I can see a whole long series of ‘Gotcha back, mofo” impeachments stretching into the foreseeable future. Henry Hyde admitted Clintonw as payback for Nixon. If we impeach Bush, these fragile GOP egos won’t let it rest. You know how long those elephant momories are…
And playing around with how to make links to, for example, Despite seeing several doctors, Ms. Pobre did not link Ambien to her nocturnal eating until after she gained 100 pounds.
But I’d like to have a preview, so I can check things out BEFORE they post.
Oh, well.
Yeah, where’s comment preview when you really need it? That should be elephant memories, not momories.
Also absolutely agree with the “genie out of the bottle” theory. But Rover can’t do anything about it. The genie is gone (and on so many issues).
Well, I slept terribly last night. My futon was so dam lumpy with all the cans of tuna and boxes of pwdered milk I had piled under it.
Guess I need a bunk bed now that the Bush Apocalpyse Bunch is ready to fire the starting gun.

And what is this blockquote thing:

What a delight these changes are to the eye!
OK, I get it. When I want to set off an indented quote, I need to do this:

And one can even insert blockquotes inside blockquotes as I did (though I don’t know why I ever will again.
What I really want to know is whether I can post pictures in my comments.
And what is an “acronym title”?
And what does “code” do for me?
Change — I like the job you’ve done to the FDL web page.
I’m glad Feingold has introduced the motion to censure Bush because it goes after the Democrats. Now is the time for them to shit or get off the pot.
And the numbering works. That is a big plus. Not sure why, but I know it is. I hated that that never worked on Haloscan.
The grey header looks to be just the right size to me now.. (just some of the comment numbers dipping below it, due to the nice font and the line location the numbers are on).
I have one more suggestion:
Consider removing the blank line directly under the grey header, so that the comments start immediately after the header? I think that will pin the comments closer to the name of the commenter (instead of to the name below them), and be clearer, without being too close to the name and date, thanks to the header. And of course, it would save space.
Otherwise, I think you’ve hit the nail on the head with this layout. Good job!
Geez, Prof you want ALL the answers today.:)
I eagerly await the next ball-advancing orders, ReddHedd.
Yours in treason,
ChristianPinko
And thanks, Vivian Darkbloom and others, for the map links.
I found some duzies to try to illustrate different viewpoints of whether, in terms of individual rights, we are one country or 50.
As always, I was counting Justices as well — and came to the conclusion that the new Supreme Court majority could well rule (5-4) that Congress cannot pass legislation that allows women to sue state governments that discriminate against women.
The question is whether the States have “sovereign immunity” even against federal remedies that Congress adopts under its 14th Amendment powers to ensure equal protection of the laws.
3 justices (Scalia, Thomas, Kennedy) who voted in 2003 to block such lawsuits by women seeking to enforce their rights under the Family Leave Act were outvoted by 6 supporting their rights, who included Rehnquist and O’Connor. Now, instead of R and O, we have A and R. I expect Alito to vote against women’s rights. Don’t know about Roberts.
Significant changes are underway. Thank you NARAL and Planned Parenthood and Joe Lieberman and Lincoln Chafee and . . . .
Tried to post this. Where did it go? Into “moderation”?

Democrats slash Feingold move on censure, as Feingold says party ‘cowering’
John Byrne
Published: Tuesday March 14, 2006
While mainstream media outlets have pounced on the fact that Democrats blocked an effort by one of their own to censure President Bush over his warrantless wiretapping program, RAW STORY has found that Senate Democratic offices are fuming. The proposal to censure the President was introduced on a Sunday talk show by Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI).
Though all say they believe the program warrants “more investigation,” several Senate aides rebuked Feingold for proposing censure. They say that his move had the potential to derail Democratic efforts to strengthen the party’s image on homeland security issues, noting that a large part of the country believes the eavesdropping program should continue. Bush has defended the program, calling it a “terrorist surveillance” program, and has used aides to defend its legality.
Strikingly, some of the criticism came from liberal Senate offices.
One longtime Senate aide was particularly scathing.
“Feingold’s grandstanding screwed the pooch and played into Bill Frist’s hands,” the aide said. “Thank God Dems punted this down the field. Frist was going to force Democrats to vote on a resolution Feingold had kept a big secret and he would’ve split the caucus on an issue that needed time to get the whole caucus to support. Russ Feingold had only one persons’ interests in mind with his Sunday bombshell, and those were his own. He practically handed a victory to a Bush White House that desperately needs a win.â€
Feingold, defending his censure plan today on Fox News, said: “I’m amazed at Democrats, cowering with this president’s numbers so low. The administration just has to raise the specter of the war and the Democrats run and hide…too many Democrats are going to do the same thing they did in 2000 and 2004. In the face of this, they’ll say we’d better just focus on domestic issues…[Democrats shouldn’t] cower to the argument, that whatever you do, if you question administration, you’re helping the terrorists.â€
Feingold’s office declined to comment.
Three senior Senate Democratic aides said they hadn’t heard of Feingold’s plan until it was proposed Sunday. One said he’d heard that Feingold was going to introduce the measure late last week.
“This thing came up quick without a lot of time for other offices and other senators to look at the resolution and decide how they wanted to proceed,” an aide said.
Some aides were more supportive. One staffer said that the climate for censure was unclear, and that despite others’ griping about the timing and approach, Democrats were still open to the idea.
“I don’t think people are unwilling” to support it, one Democratic Senate aide said. “I don’t think people are 100 percent yes. If you look at the comments of Senator Reid and other senators’ comments, you can see that other people want further investigations. Nobody’s said no on censure except Joe Lieberman as far as I know.â€
One aide said that some senators felt the move went “too far.”
“I just think you know there’s was a concern among a number members of the caucus that this was going a little too far,” the staffer remarked. “The majority of the American people agree with what the president’s doing. A lot of people outside the beltway see this as a tool that’s keeping Americans safe.”
The aide added that some members have concerns that backing censure would hurt Democrats’ image on national security.
“There were concerns that this would backfire on the Democrats just as they were beginning to get the upper hand or at least beefing up the playing field on homeland security credentials,†the aide added. “The Dubai deal, the war in Iraq, the president’s numbers heading south. Democrats have a long history of shooting themselves in the foot when the good things work and we’ve been known to do some things that end up hurting us rather than helping us.â€
Several aides said their offices were stressing “more investigations†as an alternative to censure. One aide said public hearings would be better in bringing Americans around to the idea that Bush had done something wrong.
“Democrats had decided that public hearings were needed on the wiretapping to educate the public before considering a censure,†one staffer quipped. “Hearings would’ve forced Arlen Specter and Lindsay Graham to continue to criticize the Administration. Everyone knew that was the gameplan. Feingold just wanted to hog the spotlight. If he were interested in holding George Bush accountable he would’ve made his pitch in the Democratic caucus behind closed doors.â€
prof,
I see a post of yours at 7:28 and 7:30.
This post is at 2:44 CST. I am not sure what the time stamp will be as this is a first post today.
P.S. I miss the “preview” option just to make sure I do not make a dumb mistake before post.
“noting that a large part of the country believes the eavesdropping program should continue.”
imagine what they’d ‘believe’ if you fuckwads got together as a group and reminded them it was done without warrants and hasn’t thwarted a single attack !!
“Feingold just wanted to hog the spotlight”
oh my, just saw that – it’s got Joe Biden’s handprints all over it !
It appears that the Dems as a party are falling down on censuring Bush faster and farther than they fell down on Alito. Raw Story has a new one up indicating that even some “liberal” senate offices are “steaming” at Feingold and declaring that he just handed Bush a win.
If true, I quit. I wont vote for any Dems that don’t stand up for the Rule of Law or the Constitution. They trump everything else. They trump ALL other considerations. There is NO question here that Bush violated the law…intentionally. Hell’s bells, he specifically didn’t go to Congress to seek to change FISA because he wanted to make the point that he has godly superpowers and doesn’t need Congress to do anything.
Alito was a big test for me and the Dems failed. I quit giving them money at that point. With censure, they risk losing my vote entirely.
Fair enough. But if the “gameplan” was to hold more public hearings, I’d LOVE to know how they planned to go about holding these meetings. Were they going to use the Official John Conyers Broom Closet and Conference Hall?
They need to get over their hurt feelings and chew Feingold out PRIVATELY if he stepped on toes.
And then they need to do the right thing, both morally and politically. They need to support censure.
Sorry, I am just going to give this a try for the first time in the new format.
I really miss the “preview” option because I am one who needs to check for mistakes.
Is this where you are to report calling your senators to support Russ Feingold and his effort to censure President Bush on domestic evesdropping and breaking the law? I called my 2 senators Richard Lugar and Evan Bayh and was allowed to voice my opinion. My name and address was taken with each phone call. I also called Senator Feingolds office and let them know of my actions and of my support. Hope this helps.
Uh…I like the new look but “your post is awaiting moderation”? Are you kidding me? Moderation with a bunch of published “Frist!” posts at the top?
I haven’t read through all the comments, so I don’t know if I’m joining a bandwagon, bucking a trend, or just being off the wall.
The old site was beautiful. Elegant design. Not like every other blog on the web.
This one’s the opposite. Clunkier type, more chaotic design, overall more generic-looking. The graphic at the top is nice, but from there on down…
(Or as Fats Waller put it, from the ankles up, it sure is sweet… but from there on down, it’s just too much feet.)
As for the content: superb as ever.
Bluegirl:
Is Bayh’s office still saying he’s opposed?
Did you call Indy or D.C?
***this comment will await moderation***?
I do nothing in moderation….
Nice look – it does hurt your eyes some to read a lot at one time with things centered.
What happens to the old site stuff? Will it get imported over or will both sites hang around for a bit.
Good luck – it must be like a moving day with all the neighbors dropping in as you are trying to pack up and leave.
Great, I misspelled my own handle two entries up.
Another quibble: I’d much rather be able to read each post all the way through, as in the old design. Clicking to read more, and then having to navigate back each time, is not so good.
Very confusing. I post, the post disappears right after I refer back to it…
Please, time, run backward in your tracks, and give me back my beloved Firedoglake design…
Breaking news: censure motion referred to Judiciary. Feingold tells Fox it’s due to Democrats “cowering”; staffer tells reporter Feingold “screwed the pooch.” VichyDems.
Sorry, bad url. VichyDems.
I concur: lovely new site! But, also, MUST left justify, not center, the text.
Where do we go from here? Well, for a teeny little start, send Brazile’s whole piece to every D.C. Democrat (and out-in-the-provinces ones too, of course). Highlight the relevant words, if necessary! (Glad to see that the scales have finally fallen from Brazile’s eyes and she’s getting on board.) And then send them this recent piece from Molly Ivins: “Enough of the DC Dems” at http://www.progressive.org/mag_ivins0306
also available here: http://www.commondreams.org/views06/0310-20.htm
And then send them Molly Ivins from 1/20/06 “Not.Backing.Hillary.” found here and elsewhere:
http://www.workingforchange.co…..emID=20250
With Donna and Molly’s (especially) pieces, I think all that needs to be said has been said for them to “get” it — unless they’re just being mindlessly stubborn and/or living in deep denial. Between the two of those ladies, we’ve got one Dem Party D.C. insider; one progressive Beltway outsider — I think those two Big Mamas should be able to whip those candy-ass little boys (and girls) into shape, make them stop whining and hiding, or else send them to their rooms with no supper and no shiny new toys till they do their required chores AND bring home something better than “Fs” on their report cards!!
Well, not totally what I mean or what we need, but it’s a good start. And my mind just took off on this wonderful image of Molly and Donna as enormous mamas standing there with their arms folded, giving that “Mama knows” look, and letting these tiny little sulking, quivering Dems know that the gig’s up and she’s not going to take this nonsense anymore!
(So sorry for not making the hyperlinks. I promise I’ll learn how to do it and work up my courage to try before I venture my next post with references.)
Jayt: Yes, Bayh is still opposed but that didn’t stop me from making my argument. He could come around…
Jayt: Sorry, forgot your other question. Called in D.C.
I love this blog. I love the content of this page. Keep the content flowing.Great job.
