Shorter Washington Monthly: "Who are these people you call bloggers?"
well, everyone knows that there ARE NO women bloggers.
So that’s one category WM can rule out.
That should have been OSHA not OHSA above…..duhhh?!?
blub, in response to:
Incidentally, there was something in the paper today about Bush trying to classify the NAMES and work locations of just under one million Federal employees.
———–
Bush won’t let the names of all those civil servants and contract people out because the media MIGHT contact them and ask embarrasing questions for the white house. Research groups were also able to contact people in OHSA, EPA, NOAA, Forestry…etc and find how bad thing have REALLY gotten. Plus, when these emplyees talk there seems to be a lot of references to politcal pressure to make the data match the policies, truth be damned. I fish Lk. Huron and it is almost DEAD. Full of farm chemicals, Dow Chemicals and forgien species. I sold my boat.
I read a good article online from a research group that can’t get much done anymore to check on our enviorment. I will try to find it again and post the link.
Wallace-Wells’ twit hit piece was a real revelation. Kos is short, and I, Benjamin Wallace-Wells am a weenie.
My goodness. Young Wallace-Wells (Dartmouth 2000) certainly went to a lot of trouble and used a lot of words to express: Disdain. Sniff. Parvenu ! Perhaps he is being paid by the column inch.
As for the paragraph that begins ….
“We are walking around his Berkeley neighborhood, and his stride is as purposeful as his conversation; I’ve probably got eight inches on him, and I’ve got to hustle to keep up.”
Is W-W that smug and/or that oblivious? Why did his colleagues allow him to publish such an revealing description – it says too much about Kos but even more about himself. Friends don’t allow friends to exhibit their [psychological] privates in print.
It reminds me of that Sally Quinn screed on the Clintons. Yes, Sally, it is excellent. You certainly put those arrivistes in their place.
new thread, new crankosphere
… and I thought bloggers was some sort of English sausage made from intestines and barley.
Mack
Funny, I thought bloggers were pointy-faced woodland creatures with black and white coats.

“One judge, speaking on the condition of anonymity, also said members could suggest disbanding the court in light of the president’s suggestion that he has the power to bypass the court.”
Bush cannot afford to lose the court (as cover) for his illegal behavior.
Incidentally, there was something in the paper today about Clusterfuck trying to classify the NAMES and work locations of just under one million Federal employees. So the very identities and locations of our civil servants will be secret. I feel more and more like we’re living in the corrupt fascist torturocracy of Peter Gilliam’s Brazil every day.
cleter and rwcole -
Why couldn’t he be held in contempt of Congress? What other punitive measures come to mind?
Much of the art of politics is timing- and keeping a story alive is a necessary job skill.
cleter–Well it’s doubtful that these guys will get a resolution passed at all- but they are keepin the issue alive.
rwcole-
what if Gonzales tells Conyers et al to screw off, and doesn’t turn anything over?
Umm.. yeah.. Clusterfuck’s gonna turn over those memos. Right. Sort of like those Exxon meeting memos from Cheney’s energy taskforce meetings. Those were very forthcoming if I recall.
John Conyers, Jr., (D – MI) ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, and 26 other Congressmen today submitted a resolution of inquiry into warrantless wiretapping of citizens on U.S. soil.
The resolution would demand that Attorney General Gonzales turn over documents believed to be in his possession authorizing the National Security Agency to conduct warrantless electronic surveillance. It would also request documents detailing any legal recommendations regarding the order.
Deadline for the hand-over would be 14 days.
Raw Story
I’m kind of liking Feingold too.
I have to say, I sure have been impressed with Russ Feingold this last week. He has consistently used as strong language as possible and has been a nice foil against the unprincipled supporters of Bush’s spying program.
Scarecrow–I don’t know what Kos sounds like, but I have been lurking there since 2002. He is very tactical in approach, and he has raised $$ for candidates. His site has become a huge group site. You can get up-to-the-minute info by someone posting on it. Also, some Dem Congress reps (i.e, Conyers, Slaughter, Boxer, Feingold) have posted there. However, I imagine the Dems are aware of many other blogs, such as this one. If they don’t have their staff reviewing all of them daily, they are foolish. If I can do it, they can. And I’ve never been better informed than since i became a blog addict.
“sparks fly”
Punch line from an old joke:
Little Girl to Little Boy:
“No I DON’T have one of those- but my mommy says as long as I have one of THESE- I can get all of THOSE I want”
The paleo-civilized female in Quest for Fire showed those neanders how to make sparks fly in more ways than one. Women rule :^)
.
Grandma–I think he’s goin to be JUST fine–some street fighters talk trash before wastin their victims- some smile sweetly- the result is the same.
Of course- Fitzy could pop up at any time with a surprise—so we got that goin for us!
Obama does deliver a very good speech. And I like him. But can he fight when needed. Will he defend himself, and the dem party when needed and not badmouth fellow dems.
Will Obama refuse to take a stand on Iraq or just opt for “doing what is necessary to help Iraq” middle of the road? What will it take for Obama to fight for all dems. Has Obama taken a stand on this current spying scandal? Other than tut-tut, I mean.
He has great oratory skills. That will help him greatly. Now if he can tone up those fighting for democracy muscles a bit, he will be great. IMO.
Yeah— and it will probably remain slow until after the holidays–The House doesn’t plan to venture back to Washington until AFTER the state of the Union- in late January–They’re back negotiating plea agreements I guess.
It is bullshit and just used as a tool to instill fear in order to have an agenda that goes unquestioned.
Enough.

Slow news day.

everybody out shopping?
The last line of this paragraph is a great quote, I think….
Remember the claims of Ground Zero firefighters, contradicting the official account, that they had actually recovered the black boxes of Flights 11 and 175? Mike Bellone and Nicholas DeMasi said the boxes were seized by federal agents, who then told them to keep quiet about it. They didn’t, though their story never even rippled the mainstream’s consensus fabrication. (But I wonder what the world would sound like if everyone bullied into silence by one method or another found their voice at the same time.)
http://rigorousintuition.blogspot.com/
Got a little goose in their step don’t they?
Why does Bush need powers to fight Al Quaeda that Lincoln didn’t have to fight the Confederacy, or that Roosevelt didn’t have to fight the Nazis? What, exactly, is it about Al Queda that makes them worse than the entire Nazi army? or the Soviet Union, for that matter? The worst-case scenario the administration and it’s apologists always trot out is that Al Queda might get a nuke. Hell, the Soviet Union had TEN THOUSAND nukes, and we didn’t suspend the Constitution so the President could keep us “safe” then.
The right-wing guy on Diane Rehm today brought up the “Al Queda gets a nuke” thing today to justify the domestic spying. When asked why they were spying on groups like PETA, he replied that it was ok because PETA was involved in crimes like vandalism and so forth. WTF? He seemed perfectly cool with using the “special war powers” to investigate ordinary crimes. It was pretty damned scary. I agree with GSD. The time to be nice is over. These people are straight-up fascists now.
obsessed,
Obama delivered the keynote address at the Dem. Party Convention in 2004. It was one of the best political speeches I’ve ever heard. If you get a chance, google around and see if you can find it.
OK. I do have a question which maybe somebody knows the answer to, on government surveillance. It’s been known for years that there are certain corrupt people you can go to and buy identity details and other information on your fellow citizens that requires surveillance to procure… usually people with ties to NSA or other intel agencies. Typically, these contacts are peddled, discretely, to parents in custody disputes, and for adoption scenarios and so forth. Does that indicate that there is massive (and presumably illegal) Federal surveillance infrastructure out there already?
Oh.. Here’s the rethug nonsequiter of the day, from CNN:
“(Rethug NSA Judge) Howard criticized Robertson’s decision to resign from the court, saying federal judges should not enter the political realm.
It “disappoints me he used resignation as a protest,” he said. “That is getting into the fray.”"
OK.. so if I resign my job because I felt ethically compromised by what my boss was telling me to do, then I am being political and therefore being bad???
Santorun still wants intelligent design to be
taught in Science classes. With all due respect
Ayotallah Rick– intelligent design is religious
mystical speculation on the creation of human
beings. It belongs discussed in “a myth class, history class or religious studies. It is not science.
He still wants the court” to test whether theories other than evolution should be taught
in science class.” He believed until a few days
ago. that intelligent design “is a legitimate
scientific theory that should be taught in
science classes.”
Since the courts ruled intelligent design is
the teaching of religious belief called creationism and and cannot be taught
in public schools
Did Ricky go to Argentina to get a brain
transplant where he is now flip flopped.
He is in for a hard re-election fight and
behind in the polls. He may just get defeated.
This is a race to watch and be involved in.
He would be a big one to take down in 06!
What I didn’t understand about the Washington Monthly article is how the “fire” from Daily Kos, to whom Dem leaders reportedly listen, seems to have so little effect on so many in nominal positions of Dem Party leadership, other than Dean. But Dean himself has been told to go build the party, but not to speak on substantive issues, hasn’t he? Wasn’t Dean just smacked down for speaking out?
So is the article correct? If so where is all this influence? And is it just the Daily Kos guy, or is it the liberal bloggers in general, including our impressive hosts.
In the article, Kos-person is described as someone who, can’t stop talking when speaking, contradicts himself, and can’t put together a coherent sentence (mayby he did advise Kerry!), so why aren’t the Dems listening more to the more coherent but forceful voices here? This is all new to me.

How come the war on drugs or the war on cancer didn’t give the president power to defy the law or the constitution? Those wars were metaphors and never-ending, but so is this one. You can’t fight a war against a tactic.
If the wingnuts were SANE- they would insist on a passage at the beginning of biology books that says:
“Science explores explanations for HOW the universe came to be- it has nothing to say about WHY it came to be- or whether or not there are non-physical forces behind the process-for that- go to church”.
In fact I dimly remember some statements to that effect in science books years ago–
Of course they are NOT sane- so here we go again.
“It is said Rick Santorum has one of the finest legal minds of the 13th century!”
He’s no Al Ghazzali.
Mayla – I’ve never heard Obama speak. Is he charismatic? The democrats badly need a candidate with a powerful and likeable personality. It just amazes me that it’s been so hard to find one.
The “good old fashioned intelligent design argument” goes like this:
Suppose you were walking on the beach- and you came upon a watch- finely crafted- keeping perfect time- would it be logical to think that it just evolved somehow on it’s own- or would you be justified in thinking that there was a designer and a builder of the watch?–Well if you would assume that in the case of the watch– how much more compelling is it to find a finely tuned universe–again you would be justified in assuming that there is somewhere a “universe designer”..
Cathy & RW: I also recall the Libby press conference being scheduled the day before. I think we’re doomed to a long, boring end of 2005 with no new Plame data to pass the endless hours.
January looks promising though, between Fitz, Abramoff, and hopefully continued legs for Snoopgate.
Also, if the pattern of the last 6 months continues, we should have some brand new unthinkably horrible Bush revelation by then. Since Katrina it seems to be about one every 2 weeks.
OT — from the previous thread:
Obama will succeed because he has an innate gift for politics – like Bill Clinton. He is a liberal who can sound like a centrist. And he’s not faking it. It’s for real. He will transcend intra-party squabbles and will appeal to a broad spectrum of the electorate.
Wilson— I believe the monks tore apart the Intelligent Design argument about five minutes after St. Thomas wrote it up!
What they missed- David Hume burned up later–the thing is a pile of ashes!
Repubs = wafflers
Repubs = irresponsible spenders
Repubs take liberties with the Constitution of the United State
Repeat these things often
It is said Rick Santorum has one of the finest legal minds of the 13th century!

Andrea wanted to have a discussion of the spygate affair–so who did she invite? Two governors- one dem one gooper..What in the hell was she thinking?
Mack – It’s not rats you are hearing, it’s the sound of Santorum flip-flopping on Intelligent Design……
“Santorum, the Senate’s No. 3 Republican who is facing a tough re-election challenge next year, earlier praised the Dover Area School District for “attempting to teach the controversy of evolution.”
But the day after a federal judge ruled the district’s policy on intelligent design unconstitutional, Santorum told The Philadelphia Inquirer he was troubled by testimony indicating religion motivated some board members to adopt the policy.”
(from the link above)
Just read that a few times- then shake your head hard and read it again–yep he really said that!
But the last time, the grand jury term was ending so we were expecting something.
Cathy– the tip off last time was that a press conference was scheduled- I believe it was done the day before- but I may be wrong about that.
just be quiet and go to sleep and listen for hoofs of DOJ reindeer on the rooftop…
I doubt if ANY gooper gets on to a TeeVee show without being drilled in advance on exatly what to say and what tone to take– the fuckers are disciplined..
I hate discipline- but it wouldn’t hurt the dems to show a bit more of it…They go on teevee and freelance- with very unpredictable results…Someone who has spent weeks on an issue and how it plays is bound to do better gameplanning than a guy who has been busy working on the budget for the last three weeks (or shopping for his girlfriends or whatever the hell they do).
rats leaving the sinking ship
OT but-
Does anyone know if there would be an announcement made the day before an indictment is issued by Fitz? Or would he do it without warning?
… and I thought bloggers was some sort of English sausage made from intestines and barley.
John– Well I don’t know if he’s an idiot or not- he was clearly trying to put his client in the best possible light- which is what he gets paid to do– the question is- why take up valuable time to hear him do it? We could have all answered Andrea’s question FOR him– we all knew what he would say…BORING!
Blub- these are the same judges who authorized Clusterfuck to hold Padilla without charges or representation in the first place- so it doesn’t look like a buncha liberals…It may be that they think Clusterfuck has made them look like fools—well—-Can’t say they aren’t.
rwcole,
Heh. Interesting. But at least it seems to be bad news for Clusterfuck. Heck.. he could get a ruling that he illegally deprived Mr Padilla of his freedom and he illegally surveilled American citizens all in the same week. That’s it.. the Civil Rights President.
“I think that she just invited people who she knows- and that guy is one of em- at the end they had a cozy little chat about internal gooper politics- just like she would have had at home with her gooper dinner guests.”
I couldn’t agree more. McKinnon was an idiot. He said “goodbye” and wished her “Merry Xmas,” before the segment was over. Andrea had more time left in his segment and had to throw him the same softball she had asked him before he said goodbye.
Blub–Yeah- that was being discussed on NPR as well- NEITHER attorney could figure that case out–not clear what the appeals court is up to or why they thought that they should take it upon themselves to do this..Apparently the Supremes could rule on it anyway- (at least according to the two dueling attorneys).
Bush Administration Defends Spying Program
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Filed at 6:27 p.m. ET
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Bush administration formally defended its domestic spying program in a letter to Congress late Thursday saying the nation’s security outweighs privacy concerns of individuals caught up in the surveillance.
In a letter to the chairs of the House and Senate intelligence committees, the Justice Department said President Bush authorized electronic surveillance without first obtaining a warrant in an effort to thwart terrorist acts against the United States.
”There is undeniably an important and legitimate privacy interest at stake with respect to the activities described by the president,” wrote Assistant Attorney General William E. Moschella. ”That must be balanced, however, against the government’s compelling interest in the security of the nation.”
President Bush has acknowledged he authorized such surveillance and repeatedly has defended it in recent days.
But Moschella’s letter was the administration’s first public notice to Congress about the program in which electronic surveillance was conducted without the approval of a special court created to examine requests for wiretaps and searches in the most sensitive terrorism and espionage cases.
Moschella maintained that Bush acted legally when he authorized the National Security Agency to go around the court to conduct electronic surveillance of international communications into and out of the United States by suspects tied to al-Qaida or its affiliates.
Moschella relied on a Sept. 18, 2001, congressional resolution, known as the Authorization to Use Military Force, as primary legal justification for Bush’s creation of a domestic spying program. He said Bush’s powers as commander-in-chief give the president ”the responsibility to protect the nation.”
The resolution ”clearly contemplates action within the United States,” Moschella wrote, and acknowledges Bush’s power to prevent terrorism against the United States.
Andrea could have had Tribe on with her- and chose these morons instead!

US Bid to Transfer Padilla Is Denied
The Associated Press
Thursday 22 December 2005
A court refuses a request to move the terrorism suspect to civilian custody and rebukes the Bush administration for its handling of the case.
Washington – In a sharp rebuke, a federal appeals court denied Wednesday a Bush administration request to transfer terrorism suspect Jose Padilla from military to civilian law enforcement custody.
The three-judge panel of the US 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va., also refused the administration’s request to vacate a September ruling that gave President Bush wide authority to detain “enemy combatants” indefinitely without charges on US soil.
The decision, written by conservative Judge J. Michael Luttig, questioned why the administration used one set of facts before the court for 3 1/2 years to justify holding Padilla without charges but used another set to persuade a grand jury in Florida to indict him last month.
Luttig said the administration had risked its “credibility before the courts” by appearing to try to keep the Supreme Court from reviewing the extent of the president’s power to hold enemy combatants without charges.
Photo–oops my mistake
It was “Bush family clearing brush at the ranch”.
Just maybe this country will be ready in the
coming months for a re-framing, re-visioning
this” war on terror.” First of all we need to
stop calling it a “war.” Second of all need to
call the current “war on terror” for what it is
to create a police state in America with the
President being above the law. So new
slogans SECURITY WITHIN THE LAW.
CIVIL RIGHTS MAKES US FREE AND STRONG.
PATRIOTS FOR A NEW AMERICA. just some
ideas.

I hope you are correct. All I heard was “counter-argument.”
Love the photo at the top of the thread:
“Early goopers fashioning a political platform”.
In my opinion–dems on teevee should confine the debate to the legality of Clusterfuck’s acts
When asked whether his acts will make us safer- they should reply-
“There’s no way of knowing that- we don’t know WHO he’s been tapping- or what he’s doing with the information–I have no idea about his motives- let’s suppose for argument that they are pure as the driven snow- they’re STILL illegal!
“The younger-than-35 liberal professionals who account for most of his audience”
Kos has put up a query asking how old dKos readers are. The results are creating a perfect bell curve–younger-than-35s are a distinct minority. Geezers rule!
The problem the Democrats have arguing this case is that they start off with the wrong premise; namely, they assume all the targets of tap were dometic operators of bad groups, so they argue general principles.
But it’s a bad way to look at this, because it’s likely that the Bush admin. supporters do not really believe in the general principle of bypassing the special court. It’s very doubtful they would grant Clinton or Carter an indulgence in similar circumstances.
Since there was no real operational reason, for security, to bypass the special court, which has alway been extremely accomodating, why don’t the Dems assume that the Pres. was doing it for political reasons?
It’s entirely possible that he was doing what Nixon did and what Noxon thought he was allowed to do to go after domestic political opposition, which he wrongly equated with foreign subversion.
It’s no secret that elements of the President’s base, believe political disagreement is tantamound to treason. You can read what they say about former President Carter.

Athaenae over at First Draft describes it as a fanwank. Bwahahahahaha!
Here’s the WaMo quote that got her goat:
Athenae’s response?
John- Actually- I think that Andrea made the same point that you did- and it was badly needed as her guest was lying his ass off through the whole interview.
My question was- “Why the hell was the guy on at all?”
What could he possibly add other than “Bush is good”–pointless and boring in my opinion- and during a period when there are important constitutional issues to explore.
She was given a gift- an opportunity to host a well watched show during a period of big news- and she does THIS- depressing.
I think that she just invited people who she knows- and that guy is one of em- at the end they had a cozy little chat about internal gooper politics- just like she would have had at home with her gooper dinner guests.
I caught the tail end of Mrs. Greenspan’s Softball, I mean Hardball. McKinnon, the latest WH shill, told Andrea that we can’t wait 72 hours for permission to wiretap. Instead of splattering him over missing something that obvious and important, she replied that the “counter argument” was that they did not have to wait 72 hours. Andrea, they don’t have to wait at all. AFTER they begin spying, they have 72 hours to apply for the warrant. That’s not a “counter argument,” it’s the law.
Jake reminded me that all’s quiet on the
Fitz front means the wheels of justice are inexorably grinding away. If reports are true
about catching officials in lies and obstruction
during the pre-Fitz dispositions with the FBI
there are going to be a lot of fish flipping and
fried when it does come out. Could this not
gut the administration strategically and leave
it vulnerable when other scandals and invesiti-
gations hit as well? There’s a lot of events
moving on an inexorable time line that will
build momentum in the months ahead. For me the strategic platform is to to re-imagine the country we want this to be——-frame it positively the vision and challenges.
I saw Dowd on hardball too. She was really funny when she started on Cheney. Lunar cycles…humm maybe he doesn’t keep a vampire coffin in his bunker after all, it may be a werewolf flea collar.

BTW, redd and Jane, is there no link from FDL to dailykos, or is the site filed under something esoteric, or did I miss it?
God, I am so sick of hearing how the 9/11 “changed everything”. How we are facing an enemy that doesn’t play by the rules. How dangerous and ruthless this enemy is.
You would think the Nazis and Imperial Japanese were a band of panty-waisted Girl Scouts that threw pies and hissy fits for for a few months back in the 30’s and 40’s.
They used humans in mills and experimented on living people, carpet bombed cities, sunk civilian vessels, gassed and shot women and children by the tens of thousands, bombed, shot, burnt, and starved millions, they had armies of hundreds of thousands, industrial might and vast populations willing to do their bidding. They had plans of world domination and were well on thier way and they planned to liquidate any nation, group or poltical party that stood in their way.
Al Qaeda was a literal handful of mostly religious fanatics who lived in the most bombed out and culturally repressive nation in the world with little technology and hardly any infrastructure, no functioning goverment beyond The Taliban.
Yet we are fed the line day in day out how ruthless and dangerous and ready to overrun the entire Western world at any moment.
It is bullshit and just used as a tool to instill fear in order to have an agenda that goes unquestioned.
Enough.

Maureen mentioned a McCain-Condi vs. Hillary-Obama 2008 race as sort of a media ‘dream ticket race.
Unless McCain demonstrates that he’s got loose screws (and maybe not even then), the GOP wouldn’t even need to fix the election to win (although I’m sure they’ll try that anyway).
