A day of dueling news conferences ended with a Senate debate that turned unusually personal. It began when Democratic leaders proposed an amendment, aimed at Rove, to deny access to classified information to any federal employee who discloses a covert CIA agent’s identity.Republican leaders retaliated with a measure designed to strip the security clearances of the chamber’s top two Democrats. Even as he urged support for his amendment, Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) acknowledged the blatantly political tone of the debate. “This is a sad and a disappointing afternoon here in the United States Senate,” he said.
Frist’s amendment failed, 64 to 33, when 20 Republicans joined all present Democrats in voting against it. The Senate then rejected the Democrats’ measure aimed at Rove, by a 53-to-44 vote along party lines. Both items were offered as amendments to a homeland security appropriations bill.
Dear Chairman Hoekstra and Chairman Roberts:We request that you immediately initiate a joint investigation into the possible release of classified information to the media alleging that the United States government may be detaining and interrogating terrorists at undisclosed locations abroad. As you know, if accurate, such an egregious disclosure could have long-term and far-reaching damaging and dangerous consequences, and will imperil our efforts to protect the American people and our homeland from terrorist attacks.
(snip)
The leaking of classified information by employees of the United States government appears to have increased in recent years, establishing a dangerous trend that, if not addressed swiftly and firmly, likely will worsen. The unauthorized release of classified information is serious and threatens our nation’s security. It also puts the lives of many Americans and the security of our nation at risk.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
William H. Frist, M.D.
That kind of desperation would be downright sad if it wasn’t so damn funny.

About Firedoglake
I think Lott must have recently read “Medea.”
I also think that Frist’s “M.D.” stands for “Mayberry Deputy”
Hey Dick, can we torture Republican senators now to find out which one leaked the existence of our European torture chambers? Huh? Please? It would improve the security of the Nation.
RT: I don’t think so. The real difference is that with the Valerie Plame issue the CIA requested themselves that an investigation be undertaken. Here we have what seems to be Congressmen leaping to the defense of what could be an imagined harm. The important question I think is whether the CIA is requesting an investigation of the prison leak.
I also agree that the Plame issue was a crime in itself while information about the prisons is revealing crimes.
KARLMAGGEDON!!!!!!!!
I wonder if they will pull the Leakers’ Security Clearance?
What’s even better, Frist now has “No Comment” about what Lott said. Way toooo funny.
Just to rise to the bait, did Frist say how the disclosure of this gulag would harm our national security – beyond the obvious fact that more of the bad shit America’s been doing has been revealed, so more nations will conclude that we’re international outlaws and refuse to cooperate with us?
Gotta admit, I’m flummoxed here. It’s not like the WaPo named names or gave locations. And there’s nothing to stop the CIA from flying agents and captives alike to a secure facility in the U.S.A.
Except then they wouldn’t have quite such a free hand to torture these people. Awwwww.
If you see Frist ripping out Lott’s heart, it is not a heart transplant…
I repeat, it is not a heart transplant!!
Time to for Hawwy Weid to send Twent some Wuv?
I can’t wait to see what Bobo has to see about this latest leak.
I just called Mr. K8 at work to tell him about today’s developments, especially Lott’s revelation. Made his day, he was laughing so hard.
[Our nightly prayer goes like this: “dear God, please see to it that those who love evil and lies are tripped up by their own evil and lies.” Thanks, God! That was a good one today!]
new thread.
froggermarch: Will he perform the anal labotomy remotely? He’s known for his remote-diagnosis skills already.
oooh yummy.
Lott is all over Frist like stink of shit.
Lott would throw President Clusterfuck over the rail if it would pull Frist along. He hates the guy.
Most political rancor is staged- I think that this is the real thing.
I see Digby wrote about this and also agrees with ym point of view:
http://digbysblog.blogspot.com…..4019537009
The reporter, Ed whats-his-face on CNN, was laughing as he was telling Lott’s tale.
joejoe
Now that’s funny. As I posted earlier- this was always a possibility. One should never publicly ask a potentially embarassing question that one doesn’t know the answer to!!!
Hope it’s true!!!
joe –
Your fingers are faster than mine! Good for you!
percy: not bad. Fits with Armando’s “transparency” principle articulated at kos. And it helps to frame what we are for and not merely position us within negative or partisan frames.
I think your sound bite is quite good, and it fits with my ideas as well.
gosh I hope Lott is right. I mean, correct.
BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!
CNN reports that Trent Lott says it was a REPUBLICAN STAFFER who leaked the info to the WaPo.
Oh God, this is too good.
Trent Lott is saying he thinks it was a GOP Senator that leaked the info on the CIA secret prisons! Bwahahahahahaha!
That didn’t turn out so good for Frist, did it?
MAKE THE PIE HIGHER! By George W.Bush
I think we all agree, the past is over.
This is still a dangerous world.
It’s a world of madmen and uncertainty
And potential mental losses.

Become more few?
How many hands have I shaked?
They misunderestimate me.

I know that the human being

Outing a CIA agent is committing a crime. Exposing the existence of “black sites” is revealing a crime.

Hastert in the House has jumped to the gooper defense. Pelosi basically says “Fine, let’s go at, but we go after the _whole_ pie.”

___ Senate Intelligence Committee ___
This is where the last stand is taking place.
Even in the current political environment, Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee are going to be looking at a hard slog. It is going to take additional and ongoing pressure on the Republican committee members in order to obtain the slightest hint of cooperation. The Republicans who control the agenda on this committee are acting as the final firewall preventing a complete gutting of the Republican party on the war in Iraq, secret prisons run by CheneyCo and torture of captives.
As I have mentioned, there are two Nazgûl on this committee, and Pat Roberts is the committee chairman… He is the leader of the Nine.
These are the people on this committee who need to get the message that obstruction of justice is just as much as political crime as it is a criminal felony:

False Equivalence Campaigns
This kind of false equivalence campagn is standard in the GOP playbook, and in this case I think they will gain some traction with it.
No, I don’t think the deluberate outing of an undercover WMD intelligence specialist during a time of war by a head of state is the same as the leaking of classified operations that may violate U. S. and international law, but you can’t fit that argument into a soundbite.
False equivalence arguments are designed to 1) pushback media coverage a bit 2)confuse the general public and 3) rally the kool aid drinking base.
I think in this case, the whole “leaking of classfied information as a national security threat” will accomplish some of all of the above.
It won’t derail the Treasongate story or investigations, but can slow a bit of its momentum. And that’s what they are after, at the least.
The press will cover this a bit and the talk show talking heads will get on it as well. Matthews will probably look into it and give it air time. Result: the story will get muddied a bit.
Of course, making this “national security argument” over the damage done by leaking threatens Rove quite directly. Once the GOP concedes that national security argument, then Rove has lost one more of his nine lives. The press will catch up to that angle of the story in a couple of days.
If I were a dem consultant, I would advise the following posture:
1) Let’s cosign the letter, rferring the matter to the FBI to see if a crime was committed.
2) As part of this, let’s also concede that the cat is now out of the bag and insist on a Congressional investigation to determine what if any U. S. laws or international treaties have been violated by the existence of the so-called black sites.
3) Finally, let’s insist again on the removal of Rove and insist that the president keep his word, that anyone involved in any leaking of classified information will be fired.
That three pronged strategy seems best to me, with all three parts inseparable.
The company’s comments, which came as Toll Brothers reported record profits for its current fiscal year, sparked a sharp drop in the price of home-building stocks today. At midday, Toll Brothers’ shares were down 12 percent, to $34.66. The Bloomberg U.S. Home Builders Index, which comprises 22 companies, was down 5.9 percent, to 348.82 points.
National home inventories have grown in recent months – in September, there was a 4.7-month supply of existing homes, up from 4.2 months a year ago, and a 4.9-month supply of new homes , up from 4.1 month a year ago.
Toll Brothers reduced its forecast for the number of homes it would sell in its fiscal year, which started on Nov. 1, by 4 percent to 7 percent. Even with the lower forecast, it expects to sell more homes than in 2005, when it delivered 8,769 homes. The lower forecast came even as the company, which is based in Horsham, Pa., posted record profits for its 2005 year.
“All of a sudden, the ads in the paper show special mortgage deals, special incentives,” Robert I. Toll, the company’s chief executive, said in an interview last week, referring to new housing developments. “That’s an absolute indicator that the market has softened.”
Here it comes- this is the hurricane that will provide a knock out punch to the Clusterfuck administration.
frogger -
It is not well known that Frist was the Attending who performed the Anal Episiotomy permitting the forceps delivery of Rush Limbaugh, after a 24 hr pic line IV infusion cocktail comprised of Dran-O, Clorox, and Metamucil failed to induce labor.
(such explain’s Rush’s subsequent Oxy jones)
—
Cookie–
Don’t knock Dr. Frist’s medical training. He may need to call on it to perform on himself the world’s first anal lobotomy.
rwcole -
Sorry that you have a “late” wife, my friend.
Yeah, I’m hip to the long-simmering ethnic tensions in France. I went to France in 2004 to see Lance take le Tour #6.
Interesting.
Personally, I loved France. But, yeah, the piled up, largely unassimilatedimmigration is problematic. Same thing in the UK. I saw WAY more people from everywhere else than actual homie “Brits.”
—
Bushlickers are now calling the French riots “Paristan.”
LOL!!!
Baguette-totin’ “terrists.”
—
At least this way we’ll find out who really killed Ron and Nicole.
Frist should delete the M.D. from his signature and add F.U.
Bobby G.
The problems in France have been percolating for years.
My late wife was french- and I visited the country regularly. The anger about algerian and other immigrants from “the colonies” has been a hot political issue for a long time-leading to a small but angry neo-fascist movement.
Of couse none of it has a thing to do with Al Queda. It has to do with maintaining the “Frenchness” of France.
OT, check out Digby.
Wow, talking about wingnuts.
Check it out right now.
Please bear with me on this one!
GEORGE BUSHS’ NEW NAME
George W. Bush’s new name is Goober Chickenshorts.
Sometimes when you have a stressful day or week, you need some silliness
to break up the day. And, if we are honest, we have a lot more
stressful days than not. Here is your dose of humor…
Follow the instructions to find your new name.
Once you have your new name, put it in the Subject box and forward it to
friends and family and co-workers. Don’t forget to forward it back to
the person who sent it to you, so they know you participated. And don’t
go all ‘adult’ … my niece’s senior manager is now known far and wide
as Dorky Gizzardsniffer.
The following is an excerpt from a children’s book, “Captain Underpants
And the Perilous Plot of Professor Poopypants” by Dave Pilkey. The evil
Professor forces everyone to assume new names……
Use the third letter of your first name to determine your new first
name:
a = poopsie
b = lumpy
c = buttercup
d = gadget
e = crusty
f = greasy
g = fluffy
h = cheeseball
i = chim-chim
j = stinky
k = flunky
l = bootie
m = pinky
n = zippy
o = goober
p = doofus
q = slimy
r = loopy
s = snotty
t = tootie
u = dorkey
v = squeezit
w = oprah
x = skipper
y = dinky
z = zsa-zsa
Use the second letter of your last name to determine the first half of
your new last name:
a = apple
b = toilet
c = giggle
d = burger
e = girdle
f = barf
g = lizard
h = waffle
i = cootie
j = monkey
k = potty
l = liver
m = banana
n = rhino
o = bubble
p = hamster
q = toad
r = gizzard
s = pizza
t = gerbil
u = chicken
v = pickle
w = chuckle
x = tofu
y = gorilla
z = stinker
Use the fourth letter of your last name to determine the second half of
your new last name:
a = head
b = mouth
c = face
d = nose
e = tush
f = breath
g = pants
h = shorts
i = lips
j = honker
k = butt
l = brain
m = tushie
n = biscuits
o = hiney
p = chunks
q = toes
r = buns
s = fanny
t = sniffer
u = sprinkles
v = kisser
w = squirt
x = humperdinck
y = brains
z = juice
Thus, for example, George W. Bush’s new name is Goober Chickenshorts. Karl Toves new name is Loopy Bubbletush and I like that as much as Turdblossom!
The next step is to link the White House refusal to share documents on John Roberts, Harriet Miers, John Bolton and now Sam Alito with Congress to the argument “they had the same intelligence”.
The White House doesn’t share everything with Congress and are proud of it. Let their own behavior refute the “we share everything” idea.
rwcole – I agree. I posted late on the last thread a similar sentiment, although not so pithely.
The hypocrisy is mind boggling, and they really are in a corner and cannot win – you would think they would know that and shut up. But they can’t – they only have two strategies – cover-up or lie, and neither can work now.
Bushlickers are losing it:
Democrat Leaders Still Target President Bush as Chaos Spreads
“Last week truly was a wake up call, particularly in America and France, but also for the entire free world. The main lessons are that terrorists must be recognized for what they are and utterly defeated, preferably abroad instead of at home; appeasement ultimately fails; a high price in blood and treasure necessarily must be paid as the price of freedom but the ultimate price of failing to pay it is paying a far higher price in blood and treasure, or loss of freedom, or both, later; and many of America’s Democrat leaders are dangerous partisan zealots and obstructionists unfit to lead America and in desperate need of replacement by patriotic Democrats who are fit.”
“In America, we saw what happened when the partisan zeal of today’s Democrat leaders went out of control. There is a War on Terror going on, initiated by a terrorist sneak attack on September 11, 2001. But the Democrat leadership has targeted President Bush instead of the terrorists. By pretending that President Bush is a liar and a warmonger and did not really believe that there was sufficient reason for him to ask for and receive from Congress authorization to invade and to liberate Iraq if, as happened, Saddam Hussein continued to refuse to comply with his obligations under the agreement made after Kuwait was liberated in 1991 and the series of United Nations resolutions thereafter adopted and then deliberately disobeyed…”
http://www.theconservativevoic…..ml?id=9639
***
Y’see, France’s race riots are automatically the work of al Qaeda, and Bush was right to invade Iraq simply because Saddam was an intransigent prick.
Ya gotta love it.

writes: “If that’s the case, why threaten to veto a law that would simply codify what Bush alleges is already the current policy? If ‘we do not torture,’ how to account for the hundreds and hundreds of cases of abuse and torture by U.S. troops, documented by the government itself? If ‘we do not torture,’ why the memos that expanded exponentially the lee-way given to the military to abuse detainees in order to get intelligence? The president’s only defense against being a liar is that he is defining ‘torture’ in such a way that no other reasonable person on the planet, apart from Bush’s own torture apologists (and they are now down to one who will say so publicly), would agree. The press must now ask the president: does he regard the repeated, forcible near-drowning of detainees to be torture? Does he believe that tying naked detainees up and leaving them outside all night to die of hypothermia is ‘torture’? Does he believe that beating the legs of a detainee until they are pulp and he dies is torture? Does he believe that beating detainees till they die is torture? Does he believe that using someone’s religious faith against them in interrogations is ‘cruel, inhumane and degrading’ treatment and thereby illegal? What is his definition of torture?”
(Andrew Sullivan)
it’s official. . .
BLACKNESS HAS BROKEN THE POT!!!
is frist a bit learning disabled???
Dazzle-
Yep- the letter is incredible. Can’t believe that they wrote it. They are calling attention to something that could cook their gooses- or geese.
It’s funny as hell!
Goopers are finally so stuck in a corner that they are going insane.
Somebody help me – did I miss the passage of the Torture Facilities Identities Protection Act?
Oh , they’ll investigate alright! Wait till theys start finding out things they DON’T want to know and that starts leaking out!
hee hee;)
They are the wuthors of their own demise!
Democratic senators Harry Reid (D-NV), Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) will call on President Bush to pledge that he will not pardon Vice President Cheney’s former chief of staff I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby if he is found guilty in connection with his role in the CIA outing case, RAW STORY has learned.
Libby was recently indicted for perjury, obstruction of justice, and making false statements to the grand jury investigating the outing of CIA officer Valerie Plame Wilson.
The letter is to be released around 2:15 pm ET. An aide tells RAW STORY the letter is “part of a sustained campaign by the Democratic leadership
Am I clear here? They want to investigate the LEAKING, but not the BLACK PRISONS?
They say, if true, such allegations could be potentially disastrous, then Frist starts to whine about security clearances…. Are the really whitewashing over the whole “hidden system of torture rooms”?!
Reid and other Dems just publicly requested that the Preznit not pardon anyone who is involved in the CIA leak.
Jon Stewart will likely have a field day with this one.

Funny no investigation of the United States of America fucking torturing people all over the freaking world?
the hypocrisy truly boggles the mind.
