Seems nobody wanted to be the first to tell Preznit See-No-Evil the truth about Katrina. According to Newsweek:
Bad news rarely flows up in bureaucracies. For most of those first few days, Bush was hearing what a good job the Feds were doing. Bush likes “metrics,” numbers to measure performance, so the bureaucrats gave him reassuring statistics. At a press availability on Wednesday, Bush duly rattled them off: there were 400 trucks transporting 5.4 million meals and 13.4 million liters of water along with 3.4 million pounds of ice. Yet it was obvious to anyone watching TV that New Orleans had turned into a Third World hellhole.
There are many reasons why people in power live in denial and create dream worlds for themselves. But the personality characteristics George Bush is evincing are typical of people with untreated alcoholism, or as we in the club call it, being a “dry drunk.”
In the parlance of alcoholism, a “dry drunk” is someone who “white knuckles” it, or stops drinking on their own but does not get any kind of treatment or participate in any type of program that will repair the damage from those “wild days in N’Owleans.” It has all the wisdom of treating yourself for cancer. Going “cold turkey” may work well for people who are simply heavy partiers and are not actually alcoholics or drug addicts, and there are many such people.
But for many reasons, I don’t happen to think George Bush is one of them.
Dry drunks are choking on rage, usually barely able to constrain it, and given to flashes of incredible temper — as George Bush reputedly is. One of those reasons may be purely physical, in that people who abuse drugs and alcohol for long periods of time usually thrash their livers, which Chinese medicine believes to be the seat of anger.
But the other, more pervasive problem is a tendency to take things extremely personally and always interpret negative news as a personal attack. Alcoholics and drug addicts seem to stop growing emotionally when they begin heavy substance abuse. Instead of living through tough emotional situations and growing as a result of them, addicts go “around” them, afraid of their own feelings, attempting to manipulate and control them with chemicals. Although the intellect may continue to grow, the emotions do not.
Thus, conventional wisdom has it that when someone gets sober, they are dealing with the emotional maturity of someone the age they were when they started drinking and using, which in Texas in the 50s probably happened no later than Bush’s teenage years. But emotional growth only commences when the alcoholic begins to take responsibility for his or her actions and seeks treatment, and there is no indication George Bush has ever done either.
Otherwise, they are just consumed with a storm of emotions they have neither the life training to process nor the tools to develop such, and on top of it all they can no longer medicate themselves into passivity. They will attempt to control “reality” in much the same way they attempted to control their feelings, with an urge to dominate and manipulate in order to shut out the ugly noise of life.
In other words, at this critical juncture in history, we’re probably dealing with a really fucked-up fourteen year-old in the White House.

I got to thinking about what it must feel like to be George Bush these days, and it led to my writing the post I’ve linked to.

Two things that are don’t exactly fit into this thread:
1) A good tactic to get people rallied against Roberts would be to point out that we don’t need another unqualified lackey in this government. Especially since we’ve just gotten rid of Brown, we don’t need more incompetence.
2) Has Laura Bush always looked like she entered a Nancy Reagan look-a-like contest? Looking at the picture a few posts down, she sure does look like she’s trying for that.
Having been to every kind of meeting there is, here’s the straight scoop: Go to AA meetings to get sober. Go to NA meetings to get laid.
The S.O.B. isn’t getting on the couch, nor apologizing, nor changing his ways. Why or how he got the way he is may be interesting water cooler fodder but it won’t save the nation from this nutcase. Barring an act of premeditated violence or disease or fatal failure of some bodily organ we’re stuck with him til Jan-’09. The Democratic Party is not going to muster any legitimate strategy or do successful battle so get used to the lying, thieving and incompetent bullshit.
…and alcoholism would be present in someone to actually vote for him?
George Bush is just a face. What I would like to see is a psychological analysis of Dick Cheney, as it is his persona that more closely approximates the metaphorical persona of the American State.
The Coropration (Movie – Jennifer Abbot) had an interesting sequence DSM-ing a corporation as a spoof on the legal protections that corporations receive under law, which treats them as individual people. I think the Dx was psychopathic personality disorder.
Really, Jane, your nephew would be appalled. :o)
Thanks, Loren. Yes the psychology of addiction is much more developed now than it was in years past and I am sure that at some time someone is going to lay GWB wide open over all of this in a way that makes him a virtual archetype by which all others are judged.
And nadine — you are right. There are many, many fourteen year-olds who are the very model of emotinal maturity next to GWB. I do apologize.
Jane, this is an excellent piece of writing. I knew GW back in his baseball days and had similar questions about his personality.
Sigmund Freud teamed up with a former aid to Woodrow Wilson, William Bulitt, to write a psychological bio of the WW1 President. A similar work on GW would be helpful.
Unfortunately for the United States, the damage of having someone with a low EQ has been pretty great. We have a heck of a hole to dig out and there probably will be more before his term is over. I think George W is bright but uneducated and untreated. What a dangerous combination for all of us.
i think you need to apologize to all of the fourteen year olds out there who are more mature than our president.
The big problem is that the government is a reflection of the president. Self-centeredness, self-will run riot, selfish, not concerned about other people, keeping people that are ‘in the club’ in positions based solely on the fact that they are ‘in the club’. Explains a lot.
That’s right, Scott. The persecution complex of dry drunks is extremely acute.
Don’t forget the ‘The World is Out to Get Me’ mindset. That fits too. I’ve thought this for years.
This is a very thought-provoking analogy and diagnosis. The intense need for prez to have close buddies with nicknames is a sign of immaturity and a need to be back in the frat house with his brothers and all the inside secrets. Still cannot imagine the leader of the free world making comments about all the good times he had in NO. Will he ever grow up? Does he realize he is a ridiculed puppet of Rove and Cheney?
I don’t know much about reformed alcoholics, since the only alcoholics I have been around never reformed. But the rage part is right, whether it has to do with untreated alcoholism or something else. The nasty nicknames he gives to his friends are another clue. The anger is probably the reason his face doesn’t work right when he tries to say something that is not belligerent.
Very interesting post. Thanks. I’m linking to it from my blog in hopes that some readers will come over and take a look.
Preznit Glug-Glug had a little problem with the bottle long ago. I never believed his claim about “findin’ Jesus” and giving it up. If it were that simple, Betty Ford would have shut down after six months. The media has to know more than they’re willing to say about this. They could pick apart every detail of Bill Clinton’s life for eight years, including the average number of late-night pizza deliveries to the White House, but they seemingly know zilch about the behavior of this Loser off camera. Yeah, right.
Rove has probably threatened them with Gitmo if they tell the truth about Preznit Delirium Tremens, and they are being good little media mutants and obeying to keep their precious access at the cost of our national soul. Perhaps the self-selection of Darth Cheney was to keep a Nixon scenario from happening again.
Any bets that once Preznit Never Accountable leaves office he starts drinking again, and in a big way? A tasty bottle of Single Malt Scotch or a good Merlot says he’s at the bottle within 90 days of passing the baton…
Once a drunk…
Do you know how to tell when an addict is lying?
His lips are moving.
I heard that from a member of NA and I have heard it many times from other recovering alcoholics, etc. GWB seems a classic case.
But what of the man behind him, Karl Rove? Here you have a man who doesn’t care about anyone but himself. Rove is a manipulator par excellence and if he didn’t have control of the White House, he would probably be a high-ranking executive in a corporation.
The word for Rove is sociopath. Most people do not see him as such because he is smooth, a trademark of the disorder. If there is a problem, he tells George to “play it this way”.
Both of them are in serious need of hospitalization.
The rest of America has to learn that you should never trust a slick talker.
