Saw CNN’s special on the series of intelligence fuckups that lead to the war in Iraq. Except for saying that they really weren’t interested in any intelligence that didn’t support their desire to invade Iraq, it more or less let the administration off the hook and blamed all the mistakes on the CIA. They did mention the Downing Street Memo, however, and also noted that Cheney’s early war-mongering speeches were fact-free and uncleared by the CIA, which was nice.
But they did hit the point hard that much of the intelligence that made Colin Powell look like a serial liar before the UN came from a source known as Curveball, whom the CIA knew to be untrustworthy. That’s reason enough to drag out this oldie but goody from TBogg:
It’s not too surprising that an Administration that treated a document entitled Bin Laden Determined to Strike In US like it was a four month-old copy of People magazine, would derive their war intelligence from a source with a codename of “Curveball.”
I just love that one.
Am off to watch the rerun of Press the Meat where Trent Lott further unsettles the Camp Crawford crew’s jolly August holiday. How bad is it when the guy they invite on to defend your Iraq policy takes the opportunity to first kick you around like a hackeysack?

About Firedoglake
The CNN show was interesting, if for nothing else than the fact that, excepting Fox of course, no network shilled for the Bush War harder than CNN. The show plainly explained that only “intel” useful to the Bush War Plan was allowed in the loop, most often brought there by Tenet. He came off looking very bad. But in the end, the program was a step by step layout of how the Bush Administration “fixed” the intel to take us to an unneeded war (a war that was apparently in Bush’s mind from the moment he took office). It also showed, clearly, the total lack of morals at the highest level of our government, especially Powell and Cheney.
Yeah, Ol’ Trent has some issues with the Crawford Cowboy and the Cat Killer, don’t he? Heh.
Back when I was young, we couldn’t trust the CIA. But it was hands off.
Now that the CIA is truly gathering intelligence and warned us about the folly of the war, it is the bad guy.
This war came from a top which ignored good intelligence.
well, i’m thinking cnn just threw a big lovenote to bushco. pin the blame on george tenet — the single holdover from the degenerate, america-hating clinton administration.
Hmmmmmm……Could Lott be thinking, “Payback’s a bitch, George!”
After all, El Chimperino did not save Lott’s bacon over Trent being a closet racist. I’ll bet that demotion back to the ranks had to sting, and definitely left a mark. So the Shrub shouldn’t be looking to Lott for any support–though Lott may water the Shrub by pissing vigorously upon him.
