It looked for a minute there like Al Bundy might be President of the United States. Once again fiction is a step up from reality.
I arrived in North Carolina safely — and was surprised to learn that more people than I think keep up with my whereabouts on this blog. The flight was fine though it takes a full day to travel anywhere from the Oregon coast (especially once you take into account the drive to Portland.)
Interesting this time — I suffer from flight agitation, not so much fear or anxiety but just “can’t we get this frigging thing over with.” Usually my inner nerd comes out and I spend the entire day compulsively working logic problems (left brain function), but this time I brought a sketch book and drew all day (right brain function). The whole experience was a lot more peaceful.
Well I should have loads of interesting stuff to report on here from North Carolina later in the day, my brand new Mac laptop blew up just before I got on a plane (and note to Apple who want $700 to fix a fifty cent power plug — you are EXTORTIONISTS!!) but the hotel has a lovely Dell that I can use so I will be happy.

Apple rocks when it comes to operating systems, but their hardware policy is sinister. Their designs are often inherently defective (i.e. the earlier PowerBook G4 models, where regular use opening/closing will eventually cause the hinge to burst from the casing around the screen), and if you don’t buy into their AppleCare thing, you could probably buy a whole new computer for what they’re going to charge for repairs. Plus, they often do things the hard way, and, for instance, instead of letting you swap out a healthy hard drive on a broken iPod to conserve your data, they just give you a new iPod and you lose everything.
I just wish they’d drop their policy of “you can only have our software if it runs on our hardware”. I have an iBook, but I’d love to be able to have an OS X partition on my new PC.
JPH: Windows indeed sucks, but you could always try Linux. Actually, Mac OS X is based on UNIX (it’s like an extremely graphics-oriented BSD), and I’ve heard you can configure a Linux install to be pretty similar (though, I’m sure, much more challenging to use, and lacking in available mainstream software).
Al Bundy, President? Wouldn’t that be a hoot.
Instead we will be treated to suspensefull fall season of Hawkeye (Alada)-v-Bobby Simone(Smits).
By the way was I the only one who saw the similaities between Santos (idealistic Texan with an ground breaking education plan) and McGarrity(the always a bridesmaid never the bride, mulitiple heart attacks ) and Bush & Cheney? It’s like they took the evil two and made them so much BETTER , for starters by making them democrats.
I’m not counting Vinnick out either. He’s definately a contender for the throne.
I’ll also put my money on CJ for the leaker . I’m betting her days are numbered.
Yeah, I thought they should fix it for free too, but they didn’t exactly see it that way. They have a pretty loose definition of “warranty.”
Though since it is new, they should fix it for free.
The 12″ powerbook is a fine computer when it is working.
And, yeah, Apple’s service rates are heart stopping. I just wish the Microsoft stuff didn’t suck so badly.
I’m afraid Jane that once again we disagree.
Your choice in computer is inexcusable! I just bought the far more morally upright 15-inch PowerBook. Getting rid of my wholly decadent 17-inch PowerBook in the process.
The 12-incher is for liberals — evil left-wingers — like you!
